Permits are now required to light any fires, if you have the required permits, approvals, skills and the conditions are suitable, conduct a controlled burn on your property to reduce fuel. Reach out to your local RFS brigade or District office to discuss your plans. Always take note of any total fire bans in your area and ensure you notify local authorities and your surrounding neighbours 24hours before you start burning.

Today, 27 Local Government Areas (LGA) commence their Bush Fire Danger Period, with several areas beginning a month earlier than normal due to the prevailing dry conditions.

Additionally, two LGA's will commence their Bush Fire Danger Period on 14 September, which is two weeks earlier than normal.

Residents and land holders should ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. Along with required fire permits, you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn 24 hours in advance.

Make sure you have hoses long enough to reach around your home, a reliable source of water (pool, tank or dam) and a diesel/petrol pump available. A well prepared home will give you more protection if a fire threatens suddenly and you cannot leave.
