Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 485 Wangi Wangi recently assisted with a planned hazard reduction burn at Kurri Kurri, working alongside partner agencies to help reduce fuel loads and lower the risk of bush and grass fires in the region.

Hazard reduction activities are a critical part of preparing for the warmer months. By safely removing excess vegetation under controlled conditions, crews help limit the intensity and spread of potential fires, protecting homes, infrastructure, and the wider community. These operations are carefully planned around weather conditions and involve coordinated teamwork to ensure they are carried out safely and effectively.

Station 485 members were proud to support this important mitigation work, reinforcing their commitment to proactive fire prevention and keeping our communities safer before fire season arrives.

Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 485 Wangi Wangi recently attended the Emergency Services Academy (ESA) for intensive training aimed at strengthening operational capability and enhancing community safety.

Crews completed advanced hose-work evolutions, focusing on precision, flow control, and coordinated team movement under pressure. The ESA facility allows firefighters to train in highly realistic scenarios, including a petrol-station fire simulation and a five-storey apartment complex operating under live-fire conditions. These environments challenge crews to apply tactical decision-making, hazard identification, and exposure protection in high-risk situations.

A strong emphasis was placed on repeated breathing-apparatus drills - “working on air” - building endurance, situational awareness, and clear communication in smoke-filled conditions. Every evolution reinforces safe operating procedures, disciplined teamwork, and risk awareness - ensuring we operate professionally, protect our community, and return home safely to our families after every call.

Training like this keeps our crew confident, capable, and ready when our community needs us most.

Our crews recently attended a local community event, proudly representing FRNSW and connecting with residents about the importance of house fire safety. The crew shared practical tips on smoke alarms, escape planning, and fire prevention, helping families stay prepared and protected.

It was also a great opportunity to chat with community members interested in joining FRNSW as retained firefighters, answering questions about the role, training, and how to apply. A big thank you to everyone who stopped by for a yarn - we loved being out in the community! 🚒

🚨 We are recruiting on-call firefighters now!
To get you extra ready to submit your expression of interes here are some key points to consider:
🏠You need to live and/or work within a reasonable distance to our fire station
⏱ You will need to indicate what availability you can commit to across weekdays and weekends
🏃The recruitment process will involve a Physical Aptitude Test (PAT) - we provide you with training resources on our website to help you prepare and train to give you the best chance of success!
🩺 You will be asked to undergo a Pre-Employment Health Assessment as part of the recruitment process

💨🌧️ ​As strong winds and rain move through, be aware that tree branches may fall. 🌳 If a branch lands on a power line or you see a downed line, your first step should be to call 000 📞 and then contact Ausgrid to report the issue.

​It's critical that you never touch a downed power line or anything that is in contact with it. ⚡ The area around the wire can also be energized, creating a serious hazard. ⚠️

​On a callout today, we found a downed line and a worried resident. Sometimes the best tool for the job is a nice cup of tea to help everyone calm down ☕—luckily, we are prepared for anything! 🚒

Earlier today, our crews were called to support Fire and Rescue NSW 464 Toronto at a challenging motor vehicle accident where a driver was trapped. Their leadership in the extrication was crucial, and we were glad to assist.

We'd also like to extend a huge thank you to NSW Ambulance for their professional care of the patient and NSW Police Force for their excellent support in maintaining a safe environment while we worked.

A big shout-out too to the drivers who showed patience and slowed down as we all worked on scene.

With challenging wind and rain expected for the rest of today, this incident serves as an important reminder: please slow down and drive to the conditions. Your safety, and the safety of others on the road, depends on it.
