Possums live in your roof because:
1) They've lost their natural homes after the destruction of habitat trees. This issue is ongoing with habitat trees still being felled.

2) A roof is a much bigger, safer version of a natural hollow than any tree can provide.

• As long as there is access to your roof, possums will continue to use it.

• Trapping and relocating possums does not work because most will likely die, either from stress or because their relocation site is already occupied by other possums, resulting in territorial fights.

• This means to stop possums living in your roof, they need an alternative place to sleep, and have their access to the roof blocked.

So, what do you do?

1. Locate the possum's entry point(s) into your roof-space. Look for fur caught on the building & scuff-marks on external walls & downpipes.

2. Build/buy at least, two, medium, vertical (rear & entry) nest-boxes. Install them in backyard trees or under your verandah.

3. Block off ALL access to your roof-space/ceiling using wire mesh or wooden panels BUT leave the main entry point open. This can be a big job & may need to be done in stages over several weeks.

4. Wait at least one week, to ensure your possums have found the nest-boxes. You can confirm this by checking for fur on the entrance.

5. One evening, when you are sure any possums denning in the roof have left for the night, block off the entry point using a solid, secure but still removable (in case you need to open it again) barrier. A piece of wood fixed with screws is ideal. Possums will almost certainly try to get back in, & in doing so they can use quite some force to remove any blockages. But in time, with alternative den sites, they will slowly become weaned off your roof-space.

Consider pruning any limbs overhanging or touching your roof to limit future access. [Simon Cherriman]

We got to Mt Gee yesterday afternoon & what a treat to see it flowing well. Water running over the track in plenty of places, but we need the Arkaroola Creek to drop before we can access with our Ridgetop vehicles. Click on the video to see the full frame
