Tropical soda apple grows up to 2 m high. It outcompetes pasture grasses, reducing productivity and competes with native plants, reducing habitat and food for wildlife.

๐Ÿ“žIf you see this plant, call your local council w**ds officer or the NSW DPIRD Biosecurity Helpline 1800 680 244.

Salvinia must not be sold, bartered, exchanged or offered for sale in NSW.

This w**d forms dense mats across the surface of water. It prevents native water plants from growing, which reduces food and habitat for fish and other animals. It also reduces water quality, blocks irrigation systems and limits recreational activities.

Salvinia can be effectively controlled with the Salvinia weevil (Cyrtobagous salviniae). The best time to introduce the weevil is in spring. Contact your local council w**ds officer for more information.

Spiny Rush has been found north of Bundarra (Uralla Shire) on Clerks Creek Rd.
IF YOU HAVE SEEN THIS PLANT, please contact Inverell Shire Council with the location and our Biosecurity officer can come and confirm the identification of the plant.

Spiny rush looks similar to many other Juncus species. In NSW there are 43 native juncus and 20 naturalised introduced species. Spiny rush's key feature is the very sharp pointed leaves and stems.
How does this w**d affect you?

โ€ข has very sharp points on the end of stems and leaves that can injure people and animals
โ€ข forms dense infestations that restrict the movement of people and animals including access to waterways
โ€ข outcompetes native plants
โ€ข is not eaten by livestock and further degrades pastures on poor soils
โ€ข provides habitat for pest animals such as rabbits.
Sharp rush is a clumping perennial plant that grows in a dome shape. Usually it is 1- 1.2 m tall but occasionally can reach 2 m.

The flowering stems and leaves look very similar. The stems are 30-160 cm long and 2-4 mm in diameter and the flowers forms below the tip. The leaves are slightly smaller and have a yellow to golden brown sheath. Both stems and leaves are.
โ€ข dark green
โ€ข thin and cylindrical
โ€ข filled with pith
โ€ข stiff with very sharp pointed tips.

โ€ข green, red or brown depending on age
โ€ข very small
โ€ข just below the tip of the stems in clusters with 1โ€“6 flowers per cluster and 5โ€“50 clusters per inflorescence
โ€ข present from spring to summer
Spiny rush also produces short creeping underground stems called rhizomes.
