NSW SES Armidale Unit MISSION: Saving lives and creating safer communities. For assistance in floods and storms call 132500

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, sto

rm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

On Tuesday night our team was called out to help Elsie - a pregnant cow who had gotten herself stuck up to her chest in mud. Her owners did all the right things - calling for help, getting heavy machinery out and contacting their vet.

Using our specialised equipment we were able to loosen the mud holding her in and pull this mama to be out of the water. She was in a bit of shock and didn't want to stand up (relatable), so was made comfortable in situ.

These kinds of rescues are always a group effort with heavy machine operators, vets and other services. We want to give a special shout out to the Diggings Rural Fire Brigade who came out to help decontaminate our equipment and ourselves (although we would like to kindly request warm water next time!).

A moment from Flood Rescue training showing the accuracy of a throw over several metres - perfectly reaching the target! This highlights the skill of our flood operators and the bravery of our camera operator!

We are so happy to hear this update on Kobe! He was such a brilliant patient and is such a sweet, beautiful boy! Here's hoping he stays out of trouble from now on.

We cannot commend Dr Eden enough for her work. It was a tricky rescue, and she was right there with Kobe the whole time, working and advocating to get him the best outcome possible. We get to work with a lot of amazing people, and Dr Eden was incredible! That said, let's hope we don't have a repeat of this anytime soon!

Today our team were called out to a large animal rescue (LARO). Kobe, an 18 month old horse, had gotten himself stuck in a well. The owners responded perfectly by getting a vet and a telehandler straight out to the scene, along with our rescue team.

The team was able to work with the owners and vet to get Kobe out and left him in the capable hands of Dr Eden of Highlands Mobile Vet. We hope that Kobe makes a full recovery and that we can visit him under better circumstances one day!

Tonight our members dove into casualty handling using the terra tamer - the big wheel that we attach to the bottom of our stokes litter. This makes navigating difficult terrain with a casualty smoother and safer - as well as a lot more pleasant for the casualty.

We practiced a whole range of skills tonight, including
📣 Communication
🪢Belaying
👯 Synchronising movements and
💑 Teamwork!

Using these skills we were able to safely move our casualty around the local lookout, as well as up and down stairs and small drops.

We had a number of brand new members tonight, and it was fantastic to see them jump in and give it a go!
