Today, we laid a tribute to our fallen brothers, Frank Petsch and William ‘Bill’ Ewen, who tragically lost their lives on Monday night on the Ballina Bar.

Our crew stood together in a minute’s silence to honour the ultimate sacrifice these two men made in the pursuit of our mission — Saving Lives on the Water.

Their dedication, courage, and commitment to protecting others at sea will never be forgotten. Our thoughts remain with their families, friends, the Marine Rescue Ballina team and all members of the wider marine rescue community during this incredibly difficult time

Our condolences go out to the volunteers and their families in this very tragic time. Incredibly saddening and being felt by everyone.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

The team at Marine Rescue Woolgoolga would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lowes Petroleum Service for their ongoing support over the past three years, supplying the diesel that keeps our vessels operating.

In just the past week, our volunteers have responded to three separate incidents; a night-time tow, a search for distressed boardriders, and a three-day search for a missing rock fisherman off Emerald Beach. Across these operations, we used approximately 675 litres of diesel, which equates to around $2,200 at current retail prices.

Support from Lowes Petroleum makes a real difference. It allows us to redirect vital funds into maintaining our vessels and tractors, improving infrastructure, investing in replacement assets, and continuing to train our volunteers to the highest standard.

We are incredibly grateful for their continued support of our unit and the local community we serve, helping us continue keeping our community safe
