Winter is one of the best times to go bird watching — and Moorabool is a seriously good place to do it.

Just beyond Melbourne's doorstep, the Shire is home to some of Victoria's most rewarding wildlife watching. As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, birds are out foraging during daylight hours.

The Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve has recorded around 200 species alone, and that's before you've explored Lerderderg State Park or the Wombat State Forest.

📚Moorabool Libraries and local writers and Jem Tyley-Miller and Wayne Marshall are proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Peter Carey Short Story Award.

For a decade, this award has honoured Bacchus Marsh’s very own Peter Carey – arguably Australia’s greatest living writer who just happened to be born and raised in this very community.

👏Carey is the author of 14 critically-acclaimed novels and four works of non-fiction, winning the Miles Franklin three times and the Man Booker twice.

🥳This weekend, we will once again host the Peter Carey Short Story Award – along with Jem and Wayne – and the Moorabool Young Writers’ Awards. Before we announce the winners next week, hear from Jem and Wayne themselves about why short stories are the focus of this prestigious award.

It’s that perfect in-between — crisp air, golden trees and wide open views.
