The “Chinese Australians and the Two World Wars” Photo and Documentary Exhibition officially opened at 2:00 pm this afternoon at the New Gold Mountain Chinese Library.
More than 50 attendees—including local residents as well as visitors from Melbourne and surrounding areas—took part in the opening ceremony.
One particularly moving moment occurred when an elderly visitor unexpectedly discovered a photograph of her father, followed by another of her uncle. Both were heroes of World War II. Deeply emotional, she took a photo with her father’s portrait and gave an impromptu speech, sharing how her ancestors came from China to Australia during the gold rush, later settled here, and contributed to the building and defense of Australia—some even sacrificing their lives.
There are many more stories like these that deserve to be remembered and honored. It is our responsibility to uncover and document them, so that people today are aware of them and that they can be passed on to future generations.
The exhibition will run from today until May 9.
