Community leaders across Ballarat are urging elected officials to demonstrate stronger leadership in addressing disrespectful and gendered behaviour in public office.

Leaders from organisations including CAFS and Allied Justice say public conduct matters, warning that disrespect towards women in leadership roles can shape broader community attitudes and undermine efforts to prevent gendered violence.

They are urging courage, accountability and active allyship to ensure respect is reflected not only in words but also in actions.

We will be open for walk-in enquiries; however, we will not be available for in-person appointments until Monday 31 August 2026.

Access to legal advice can be a turning point for people experiencing family violence.

When people can access legal help early, they are better supported in understanding their rights, exploring their options, and taking steps towards safety for themselves and their families. Without timely access to legal advice, problems can escalate, putting people at greater risk and making it harder to achieve safe, lasting outcomes.

Community legal centres play a critical role in helping people navigate complex legal issues during some of the most challenging times in their lives. However, this support can only continue if services have secure, ongoing funding to meet growing demand and provide the long-term assistance communities need.

🌏🖤💛❤️ International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples | Honouring Indigenous Midwives 🖤💛❤️

Today, Allied Justice joins Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Indigenous communities worldwide to celebrate the strength, resilience, knowledge and cultures of the world's First Peoples.

This year's International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples theme, "Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being", recognises the vital role Indigenous midwives play as knowledge holders, carers and community leaders. Indigenous midwifery embodies generations of cultural knowledge, supporting families, strengthening cultural identity and ensuring the continuity of Indigenous ways of life.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the passing down of cultural knowledge, connection to Country, community care, and holistic approaches to health and wellbeing have sustained people for tens of thousands of years. Today's theme reminds us of the importance of protecting and valuing Indigenous knowledge systems and ensuring culturally safe, accessible care for future generations.

As we celebrate World Indigenous Day, we acknowledge the ongoing contributions of First Nations peoples as leaders, healers, advocates, carers and custodians of culture. We reaffirm our commitment to justice, self-determination and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We honour the wisdom of our Elders, the strength of our communities, and the generations of knowledge that continue to shape a healthier, more just future for all.

🏠 6,000 to 8,000 homes are needed in Ballarat and surrounding areas to meet current housing demand!

As Homelessness Week shines a spotlight on the need for urgent action, our Housing Justice Project Manager, Romy, attended the Central Highlands Homelessness Alliance's Houses at the Lake event at Lake Wendouree.

Homelessness Week, coordinated by Homelessness Australia, is a national campaign that builds community support and drives government action to end homelessness. This year's theme, Homelessness Action Now, highlights that we already know the solutions to homelessness. What is needed now is action at the scale and urgency the crisis demands.

One of the most powerful features of the event was the display of 6,000 origami houses, representing the thousands of additional homes needed across the Central Highlands region. Romy noted that the display reflected the estimated 6,000 to 8,000 homes needed in Ballarat and surrounding areas to meet current housing demand. Across Victoria, 60,000 origami houses are on display to represent the need for additional social housing statewide.

The event's message was clear: everyone deserves a safe, secure and affordable home. To make this a reality, we need more social and affordable housing, along with greater investment in the services that support people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness.

Today, on National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, we celebrate the strength, pride, voices and potential of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. This year's theme, Living Our Truth, honours the importance of truth-telling, the sharing of knowledge across generations, and ensuring children's stories, identities and experiences are seen, heard and valued.

At Allied Justice, we recognise that children thrive when connected to family, community, culture and Country. We stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, Elders and communities to celebrate cultural strength, leadership and the knowledge passed down through generations.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day reminds us of our collective responsibility to listen to children's voices, support their aspirations, and help build a future in which every child can grow up safe, strong and proud of who they are.

Australia’s new emergency warning system, AusAlert, will conduct a national test at 2pm (AEST) Today, Monday 27 July 2026. The test alert may sound on compatible mobile phones, even if they are set to silent or Do Not Disturb.

If you are concerned about your personal safety, including if you are experiencing family violence, it’s important to be aware of this test and consider how it may affect you.

📱 Critical Alerts may sound even when a phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb.
📱 Critical Alerts will not sound if a phone is switched off or on Aeroplane mode.
📱 If it is safe for you to do so, you may wish to switch off a device before the scheduled test and turn it back on once the test period has ended.

AusAlert is Australia’s new national emergency warning system, designed to send urgent safety messages directly to compatible mobile phones during emergencies, disasters and other significant events.
