🚨Today is Smoke Alarm Action Day!🚨

🔥 Did you know that when you are sleeping you lose your sense of smell?
🔥 Did you know most fatal fire occur between 8pm and 8am?
🔥 Did you know that more than half of residential fires that resulted in serious injury or death started in sleeping or living areas?
🔥 This is why it is recommended to have a smoke alarm in every bedroom and living area
🔥 Victorian Fire Services also recommend smoke alarms with a 10 year long life battery
🔥 It is best to have interconnected smoke alarms so that if one is sounded, all smoke alarms in the household sound
🔥 There are also speciality smoke alarms for people with hearing difficulties that include a strobe light and vibration pad
🔥 Research conducted by Fire & Rescue NSW found that the number, location and interconnection of smoke alarms were more important than the type of smoke alarm

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and South West Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:50 pm Sunday, 31 May 2026.

Damaging winds to develop about central and eastern areas from Monday afternoon.

Weather Situation: A complex low pressure system will approach Victoria on Monday, with vigorous northwesterly winds expected ahead of a cold front which will cross the state on Monday night.

For CENTRAL VICTORIA: Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are likely to develop from Monday afternoon over the Macedon and Otway ranges and their southern slopes. Into the evening DAMAGING WIND GUSTS are also possible over lower lying areas including the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Winds are then forecast to ease before dawn on Tuesday morning.

For the NORTHEASTERN RANGES: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely over elevated areas above 1200 metres from late Monday evening. Winds are then forecast to ease by late Tuesday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Falls Creek, Yarra Glen, Dargo, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Omeo and Apollo Bay.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Sunday.

Check https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Monday night our members undertook Breathing Apparatus (BA) training, this included, search and rescue techniques, first aid scenarios, hose handling techniques and teamwork.
Photos show our engine bay filled with theatre smoke to make it realistic, visibility was down to less than a metre making it difficult for crews.

This was a fantastic day, being able to educate our younger community makes it all worthwhile.

Don’t forget to pop in and say g’day this Saturday between 10am-4pm 👋
The BBQ will be on, fun for the little kids and the big kids alike 🚒🚒

As part of the Ballarat Heritage Festival, the Ballarat Fire Brigade will open its doors to the public.

The Ballarat Fire Brigade boasts the oldest operational fire station in the Southern Hemisphere. Established in 1856, the Ballarat Fire Brigade has remained operational, serving the community, for 170 years.

Come and experience life as a firefighter throughout the years. Walk through the old station and witness history, photos, artefacts, tales of the old times and more. Then make your way through to the new station, look over the firetrucks, have a sq**rt of the hose and enjoy a sausage off the barbecue.

This week we take a moment to stop and think about Road Safety.

We remember the lives lost, those affected by loss and those changed by road collisions.

Road collisions don’t just affect the person in the crash, it causes a ripple effect throughout communities.

This week we are encouraged to think about our own road behaviours and choices. And we take the time to learn something new, correct bad habits and remind ourselves of the importance of Road Safety.

As a Road Crash Rescue Unit, we hold this topic close to our hearts. And we also think of the all the other emergency service persons who are witness to these tragic events.

Please take a moment. Stop ✋.
What choices will you make on the road next time you drive? 🚗
