Australia’s Carbon Hypocrisy: Why We Must Tax Carbon Like To***co

Have a read of our Director's response to Development Intelligence Lab’s Intel question this week.

What will it take for the region to believe Australia is serious about climate action?

"If Australia demonstrates meaningful action, it will be seen not merely as a neighbour, but as a true member of the Pacific family...”

The Intel is a barometer for Indo-Pacific development issues. One topical question a week, three expert responses every fortnight. Short, sharp and provocative.

In this special episode of A Just(ER) Generation, we honour Uili Lousi—beloved Tongan climate advocate, artist and cultural custodian—who sadly passed away on 20 June. Recorded prior to his passing, the conversation offers an intimate portrait of Uili’s vision and artistry: creativity as a vehicle for healing and relationship-building, holistic care of body and spirit as the foundation for caring for land and ocean, and strength drawn from unity and the interconnectedness of all life. We offer this episode in gratitude for his voice, vision and legacy.

New episode of A Just(ER) Generation: Professor Daniel Ghezelbash reflects on how his family’s refugee story—and his cousin’s asylum journey—shaped a lifelong commitment to justice. Born in Australia to Iranian refugee parents, he shares how these experiences set him on the path to becoming one of the country’s leading voices in international refugee law. As Director of the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW, Daniel unpacks Australia’s shifting asylum policies, the global “race to the bottom,” and the urgent need for cooperation. He also explores misinformation, the impact of technology and behavioural science on public opinion, and how tools like AI can be harnessed to uphold human dignity.
