2025 Wrap from Cr John Friend-Pereira -Solway Ward
In Part 1 , I run through what’s been delivered over the past year — focused on safety, smart sustainability, and responsible use of public money.
🚶 Safer trails, better connections
Shared-path safety came through loud and clear. That’s why we’ve delivered the new wombat crossing at the Dion Street Bridge, with more improvements on the way. Council has also committed $4 million in 2025–26 to keep building out the Greenways network across Boroondara.
♻️ Smarter recycling, not more bins
I am advocating for alternatives to a fourth glass bin on households. The evidence showed it would cost millions and deliver little benefit. Instead, we’re backing practical circular-economy solutions — expanding Container Deposit Scheme drop-off points, reverse-vending machines, and trialling CDS baskets on street bins. Less waste, lower cost, and better support for local community groups.
🏘️ Ashburton Police Station
For too long this site has sat empty. I’ve kept pressure on the State to stop treating surplus land like an afterthought and start seeing it as an opportunity — for community use and social housing where it’s genuinely needed.
💰 Responsible spending, transparent finances
In 2024–25, Council delivered an $11.9 million surplus while continuing to invest in libraries, parks, roads, community facilities and services. This is about avoiding unnecessary rebuilds and making sure every dollar works hard for the community.
🏡 Heritage homes & energy efficiency
We’ve delivered clear solar guidelines for Heritage Overlay properties, with eligible permits approved in as little as 10 working days — removing confusion and making it easier for residents to cut energy bills.
▶️ This is Part 1.
Part 2 will cover the priorities I’m focused on for 2026 — and where the work needs to go next.
