We were recently tasked to a complex early morning rescue at Avoca Beach during a '1 in a 100-year swell', after a man was injured by a large wave while walking at the base of a cliff.

With the tide rising he couldn’t be safely accessed by rescue crews on foot or by rope from the top of the cliff, and our team were tasked to respond. An initial winch attempt was aborted due to the wave spray and poor visibility, but with confirmation that the patient was safe from the waves at the base of the cliff, the aircraft and crew landed nearby to wait until first light.

At sunrise, a NSW Ambulance Critical Care Paramedic was winched to the patient and provided the medical care required, and once tide conditions improved the patient was winched out and transported to Gosford Hospital.

Dr Shane shared these incredible photos, along with an important reminder for the community watching on to take care around cliffs and rock platforms: “One of the risks during the mission was the people standing very close to a loose, sloping cliff edge.”

Last month we were tasked to support a group of six bushwalkers from Adelaide undertaking a four-day hike in Kosciuszko National Park, one member of the group broke their leg and the Toll SouthCare Rescue Helicopter was able to treat and airlift them to Canberra hospital.

Fellow hiker Anna shared these photos and videos which beautifully captured the teamwork of the crew, “I would like to thank your staff so much for their care and very prompt response.”
