We are partnering with researchers at the University of Wollongong to conduct a study into young children’s screen use. This research will help develop a future health promotion campaign on healthy screen use for children aged 3-5 years.

If you live in south west Sydney and are a parent or caregiver of a child aged 3-5 years, we’d love to hear from you! We are asking parents or caregivers to complete a survey about their child’s screen use. The survey is available in English, Arabic and Vietnamese.

A day Sarah will never forget 💙

Sarah Rolls, Clinical Nurse Consultant at our hospital, reflects on a patient who left a lasting impact on her.

Over more than a year, Sarah supported Roger, who lived with cirrhosis, diabetes and heart disease, working closely with him and his family to manage his care while maintaining quality of life.

Roger brought humour to even the most difficult moments, often insisting icy treats didn’t count as “fluids.”

Near the end of his life, Sarah sat beside him, holding his hand as he rested. As she prepared to leave, Roger opened his eyes. Though he could no longer speak, the recognition was clear, a quiet, shared goodbye.

“It’s a reminder that nursing is never just a job, it’s a privilege,” Sarah said.

Teegan Barber, our Acting Midwifery Unit Manager, says International Day of the Midwife is always a moment to pause and reflect on the importance of her work.

One experience that has stayed with her was supporting a woman through the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) model, from early pregnancy through to birth and the first weeks of motherhood. The woman began feeling uncertain and overwhelmed, but through continuity of care, trust gradually grew.

By the time she went into labour, she was drawing on her own strength, confidence and instinct.

“Being there not just as a clinician, but as a familiar and trusted presence, reminded me how powerful continuity of care truly is,” Teegan said.

Watching her advocate for herself, embrace the birth experience and step into motherhood reinforced that midwifery is about more than outcomes, it’s about relationships, trust and empowering women.

“Moments like that stay with you. They’re a reminder that what we do makes a lasting difference.”

This International Day of the Midwife, we recognise the impact of continuity of care and the lasting connections midwives build with women and families.
