Once a year Australia puts on its Lab Coat to celebrate SCIENCE WEEK. The parents of school age students will have been warned.

There is absolutely nothing on this Earth that has been made that did not have a basis in Science. Even First Nations tribesmen honed their hunting skills by trial-and-error with weapons. Living in huts that kept out the cold breezes at night. Used plants as medicines as well as food.

Yet every shop has goods made for a particular task. Pay your money and buy the latest gadget. Need l say more. C'mon - be creative this week. Show your Science brain, and pass on the knowledge. B

What a way to start the day. 06:00 with a sky full of stars. Yep! In this photo just taken with my iPhone - you can zoom in to see the Seven Sisters in the centre.

To the right hand side is Aldebaran (upper) and Mars (lower). Out of view is Orion the Hunter who is eternally chasing the Sisters in Greek mythology.

First nation tribes have a similar story and these star clusters feature prominently in indigenous art works. Enjoy!

Gentle notice for August. National Science Week 2026 runs from 15 to 23 August.

I am amazed that so many people, not just parents, are hesitant about involving themselves in Science based activities. Scary stuff. All those white-coat people in laboratories everywhere. Knowledge dripping out of their pores as they work!

Yeah right!

Science can be summed up in two words : Asking Questions. Seeking Answers. So why not investigate the Science of Science.

What can I cook with these ingredients? How can I save electricity without buying new appliances? My child will run faster when he .....? The sky is the limit. Science is everywhere, all the time.

What will we discover next? Science is magic. Make it work for you. B.

Here are a couple of worms for the early birds. Just taken at 04:30 in my insomnia.

Last quarter Moon getting closer to dark skies again for the next two weeks- and

Andromeda Galaxy our next door neighbor.

Hugging the East horizon are the 7 Sisters, Uranus and Mars. Ah!! The progression of the sky. Where would we be without it. We wouldn't exist.

I'm satisfied with this photo of the 'down part' of the Big Dipper. Ursa Major- the Bear.

Essentially a Northern hemisphere constellation the tail end of which is visible in late Autumn / early Winter. Many European visitors have asked me 'where is it'. I couldn't tell them.

This is now one more tick off the bucket list. Maybe next Autumn l will get another chance.

Just playing with the Moon. A large Cirrus cloud danced in and spread a gentle haze over the surface. Hence the mottled shading.

The giant crater makes an impression like the valve on a basket ball. Or the end of a watermelon. Let your imagination go free ....
