In early January, Barjarg's tanker was in Ruffy as part of a Strike Team at the Longwood fire. They found themselves defending a home in 'catastrophic' weather conditions, facing down fire coming at them from three different directions.

They tell their story not only to record their experience, but for the critical information that home and property owners need to hear - a well-prepared property might make the difference between your home being successfully defended or lost to fire.

We'll repeat this message in spring, but if you're in Barjarg and you want to ensure you are best prepared for summer, contact us regarding the Property Advice Visit Service (PAVS). We'll bring out our truck and check truck access, available water, and discuss property preparation and your planning for fire and hot days.

We are thankful that our crew made it through this experience in one piece, and proud that volunteers can be there when communities need them most. If you’ve ever considered joining CFA, reach out to your local brigade to see how you can contribute!

πŸš’πŸ’° Can you help your local brigade? πŸ’°πŸš’

Barjarg Brigade has submitted a grant application for an ultra-light tanker (ULT). While the CFA covers most of the cost, our brigade needs to fund the rest. Can you chip in? Any amount helps!

While our brigade's tanker remains a valuable asset to our community, we have a number of reasons why an additional, quicker, more agile firefighting vehicle is important:

🚨 A lot of our callouts are on or alongside the Midland Highway - whether they be vehicle accidents, unregistered burnoffs or other fires called in from travellers on the highway. A ute can get to a job much quicker than a truck can.

🚨 Barjarg's road network includes 22km of sealed roads, but over 200km of unsealed roads! The remainder of our local callouts are along these dirt roads, but many of these cannot be easily navigated in our medium tanker. And even if we can get to a property, hilly paddocks often make getting to a fire tricky. A ULT can often get where a tanker can't - meaning we can get to more fires, more quickly.

🚨 A ULT has a crew of two, and doesn't need a truck license to drive. Because Barjarg doesn't have a township, our firefighters often have to travel kilometers to get to the station if we are called out. A ULT means the first two responders can immediately head to the fire, while other firefighters arriving later can crew the tanker if the cavalry is needed.

🚨 If our tanker is out on Strike Teams or away at another job, a ULT allows us to still turn out to a local event that needs firefighting or emergency response.

In all, a ULT gives Barjarg brigade the opportunity to get on-scene much earlier - meaning small emergencies don't have a chance to become big emergencies!

With thanks to the Barjarg and wider Mansfield community, along with some generous donations from ex-members, we are about half-way to our fundraising goal. Can you help us to raise the remaining $10,000?
