This Adult Learners Week we’re celebrating students like James. He returned to training at 52 years old and completed a Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations with Batchelor Institute in Tenant Creek last year.

We are hiring an Administration Officer to support the Dean Higher Education and Research at our Batchelor campus.

This full-time permanent AO6BI role (increment 1, $105,044 plus annual incremental progression under the Batchelor Institute Union Enterprise Agreement 2025) provides high-level executive, secretariat and administration support. Work includes diary and travel management, reports, meeting papers, records systems and project assistance for teaching and research staff.

We strongly encourage Indigenous Australian applicants.

You will need a relevant tertiary qualification and/or certificate or diploma in business administration, or previous executive/administration experience, plus an Ochre Card and current Police Check (or the ability to obtain them before starting).

On Arrernte Country in Mparntwe, language, culture and community were front and centre at the Mparntwe NAIDOC 2026 Ball.

Congratulations to Auriel Swan on winning the Education Award. A proud Pertame woman, educator, grandparent and community leader, Auriel is carrying forward her late mother’s legacy and keeping Pertame language and culture strong for future generations through the Pertame Language Nest.

And congratulations to the Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL) team at Batchelor Institute on winning the Innovation Award for Angkentye yerrtye ileme – the Arrernte Street Signs project. Seeing Arrernte language made visible across Mparntwe is Both Ways work in action – language on Country, in community, for community.

Thank you to Pertame School for sharing the night, and to the NAIDOC Week Alice Springs Committee for the volunteer hours that made the celebration possible.

Congratulations to every finalist, winner and community member who continues to keep language and culture strong.

National Skills Week showcases where vocational education and training (VET) can lead. For Selena’s students, it can lead to sharing stories and finding their voice on radio.

One of the highlights of Selena’s work is seeing students grow in confidence and develop a passion for media. She enjoys watching students build their skills and go on to become successful media practitioners, while also learning from her students along the way.

Teaching the Certificate III in Screen and Media (radio), Selena helps students develop the skills to plan and deliver a live 30 minute radio broadcast that contains a pre-recorded interview, a vox pop, music and written scripts. One of the highlights for Selena’s role is attending festivals and community gatherings with her students, where they can put their training into action through live outside broadcasts.

Selena’s message to those considering VET is simple. Take one step at a time, give it a go and be proud of yourself for making that first step. Don't be scared to take on opportunities that come your way, because you never know where it may lead.

National Skills Week showcases where vocational education and training (VET) can lead. For Batchelor Institute trainer Lare, it has led to a career built on a lifelong connection to the Institute.

Lare’s connection to Batchelor Institute began through her father who worked as a lecturer and Head of Education, Science and Computing from the 1970s to 2003. During his time at Batchelor Institute, he helped train the first cohort of teachers and principals who returned to work in their communities.

With 26 years of experience in early childhood education, Lare was selected to participate in the ‘Grow Our Own Trainers’ pilot program with Batchelor Institute. Appointed a trainee trainer in 2019, the opportunity set her on the path to become a qualified VET trainer assessor and lecturer with Batchelor Institute.

Teaching the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, and the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, Lare supports students learning both in the classroom and within childcare services by providing mentoring and role modelling in real workplace settings.

Many of Lare’s students bring valuable lived experience as parents, aunties and siblings. She helps educators weave their own cultural knowledge, such as bush medicine, bush tucker, traditional songs and dances, into early childhood education practice, while linking these experiences to Western educational theories and frameworks. This both ways approach recognises the knowledge students bring and supports them to build new skills through formal study.

One of the highlights of Lare’s work is seeing students overcome barriers and self-doubt to complete their qualification.

Today we attended the VET Careers Expo in Darwin to showcase the training options available at Batchelor Institute and the career opportunities they can lead to.

With more than 1,400 students attending throughout the day, there was plenty of energy, curiosity and enthusiasm at our stall. Our riddles, VET-themed quiz questions and merchandise were a hit, but the best part was hearing about students' career aspirations. We look forward to supporting the next generation of Territorians on their career journey.

We also enjoyed taking part in the dedicated Quiet Hour, which created a more inclusive and welcoming environment for students with additional needs.

National Skills Week showcases where vocational education and training (VET) can lead. Our trainer Suman helps students take that next step.

Through Certificate I and II in Workplace Skills, Suman helps students build everyday skills needed to get a job and succeed in their first week at work. He also teaches Certificate III and IV in Business where students develop more advanced business skills.

For Suman, bringing a both ways approach into his teaching is not about choosing one knowledge system over the other. It is about valuing both and recognising that his students learn best when their identity, culture and lived experiences are acknowledged in the classroom.

The most rewarding part of Suman’s role is watching students grow in confidence. Many students start their studies unsure of their abilities, and seeing the shift in perspectives makes his work so fulfilling.

Suman said he would strongly encourage anyone thinking about VET or skills training to take that first step. He believes VET can help people figure out what they enjoy, what they’re good at and what direction they might want to take in the future.
