On Saturday, specialist chainsaw operators from across South Eastern Area Command (SEAC) came together in the Southern Tablelands District to battle it out for the opportunity to represent SEAC at the NSW RFS State Championships Chainsaw Event later this year.

The competition put members through a range of challenging events testing precision, safety and technical capability, including tree felling, chainsaw maintenance and techniques, site safety and hazardous tree identification.

🏆 Results from the day:
Coming in first place, Dave Alexander – Shoalhaven District,
Scott Thornton – Riverina Highlands in second place,
Chris Strange – Shoalhaven District in third place and
Matt Jennings – Far South Coast District in fourth place.

Dave will now go on to represent SEAC at the NSW RFS State Championships in Dubbo this September, where he’ll face off against current reigning State Champion Richard Alley from Southern Tablelands District.

A huge congratulations to all competitors who showcased an exceptional level of professionalism, skill and operational capability throughout the competition. The results reflect the high standards of chainsaw operators we have across South Eastern Area Command and the significant commitment our members make to maintaining safe and effective operations.

Best of luck to Dave and Richard as they prepare to represent SEAC at the State Championships in Dubbo from 11–13 September. We’ll certainly be cheering them on!

St Florians Day – May 4

Today, on St Florians Day also known as International Firefighters’ Day, we recognise and honour the dedication, professionalism and service of firefighters across the South Eastern Area Command, throughout NSW, and around the world.

This day is an opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of our volunteers and staff who protect their communities year-round. From frontline firefighting and incident management, to training, mitigation works and community engagement, the contribution is both significant and ongoing.

We also take a moment to remember those firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and reflect on the risks that come with this role.

Across our six Districts, our members continue to demonstrate the values of service, teamwork and resilience in everything they do.

To all firefighters — thank you for your dedication and your service.

ANZAC Day 2026

Today, communities across the South Eastern Area have come together to honour and remember the service and sacrifice of our ANZACs.

Members from across our districts will attend dawn services, marches and commemorations, standing alongside veterans, families and the wider community in reflection and respect. We acknowledge those who served, those who continue to serve, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

The ANZAC spirit, continues to resonate within our communities and across our Service.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Official Opening – Surf Beach Rural Fire Brigade

The South Eastern Area Command was proud to be in attendance at the official opening of the new Surf Beach Rural Fire Brigade station yesterday, alongside representatives from across government, emergency services and the local community.

Co-located with the NSW State Emergency Service, this purpose-built facility provides a modern, safe and functional environment to support operational response and strengthen interagency collaboration in the region.

This station represents a significant investment in community safety and ensures our volunteers are equipped with the infrastructure they need to continue protecting lives and property.

The occasion also provided an opportunity to recognise the dedication of our members, with Long Service and National Medals presented — collectively acknowledging an incredible 150 years of service.

Congratulations to the Surf Beach Brigade, NSW SES, and all involved in delivering this important community asset.

⏰ Change your clock. Check your smoke alarm.

As daylight saving time comes to an end this weekend, we’re reminding all residents across the South Eastern Area to take a few moments to check their smoke alarms.

Working smoke alarms save lives.

With cooler months approaching, many households will begin using heaters, electric blankets and fireplaces. A functioning smoke alarm provides critical early warning, giving you and your family time to respond safely.

✔ Test your smoke alarms
✔ Replace batteries if required
✔ Ensure alarms are clean and free from dust
✔ Check you have alarms installed in key areas of your home

Daylight Saving Ends:

🗓 Sunday, 5 April 2026
⏰ At 3:00am, clocks go back to 2:00am

While many devices will update automatically, don’t forget to adjust manual clocks before heading to bed on Saturday night.

This simple habit, when the clocks change, check your smoke alarms, can make all the difference.

🔥 Bush Fire Danger Period Concludes – Key Information for Landholders

As of midnight today, 31 March, the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) will conclude across the six Districts within the South Eastern Area Command.

While a fire permit may no longer be required, there are still important legal responsibilities in place for anyone planning to burn.

If you intend to conduct a burn, you must:

✔ Notify NSW RFS at least 24 hours prior You can submit your notification online here: 🌐 www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify
✔ Notify your immediate neighbours at least 24 hours prior

This is critical to help prevent unnecessary Triple Zero (000) calls and avoid emergency brigade responses to planned burns.

⚠️ Important: If you live within a Fire and Rescue NSW Fire District, a fire permit is required year-round. Permits can be applied for via the Fire and Rescue NSW website.

Before lighting up, ensure you:

• Check weather conditions
• Have appropriate resources on hand
• Monitor the fire at all times
• Remain in attendance until the fire is fully extinguished

For more information on BFDP and safe burning practices, visit: 🌐 www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

Your actions help keep our community safe and support our volunteers.
