ON NOW // Heather Dunn 'Found'

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery presents a new exhibition by local artist Heather Dunn in the Foyer Gallery.

'Found' is less about the act of physically collecting objects and more about observation and presence within a landscape.

A road trip in 2025 across the Nullarbor and through the outback of South Australia during one of the region’s most severe droughts in recent history formed the basis for the imagery in this body of work. Australia’s vastness is central to the experience: immense skies, cathedral-like quiet punctuated by birdsong, stark light and the beauty of the gloaming.

The fragments of wire used in this exhibition were largely gathered from areas of abandoned settler infrastructure. Colonial expansion into the marginal rangelands and semi-arid regions of South Australia produced cycles of boom-and-bust exploitation of the land, leaving visible traces across the landscape.

Ruined towns, farm complexes and transport infrastructure remain scattered across the Flinders Ranges, often well beyond the 300 mm rainfall line. Many of these developments emerged from speculative attempts to profit from the occasional favourable season, resulting in the occupation and transformation of unceded land. Even Wilpena Pound was not immune to this extractive approach, having been cropped for wheat for several seasons during the nineteenth century.

Within this context, the small fragments and found materials in Found evoke vast and empty vistas, reflecting on the indifference of the natural world to human ambition and the marks left by settlement.

ON NOW // Elizabeth Day 'The Fragility of Goodness: The Prison on the Landscape and Other Stories', curated by Ann Finegan.

This survey exhibition by Elizabeth Day examines the legacy of Empire and the colonisation of Australia and its First Nations peoples. The exhibition focuses on the lasting impact of colonial prison systems and how these institutions reshaped both landscape and society.

The project connects closely to Bathurst’s history as part of a network of colonial prison towns established west of the Blue Mountains. Day has explored these themes in earlier works: in 2023, she presented 'There’s a Reason Beyond a Reason, 1797 Parramatta Gaol' at The National 4 at Carriageworks, Redfern. This large-scale textile installation was made from unravelled second-hand garments and referenced early colonial prison architecture. Through the slow process of unravelling fabric, the work suggested the possibility of undoing the prison’s imprint on the landscape.

'The Fragility of Goodness: The Prison on the Landscape and Other Stories' continues this investigation. The exhibition considers how the histories of colonial prisons continue to shape contemporary Australia. Day draws connections between historical penal sites including Parramatta and Tasmania, engaging with ideas of layered colonial, geographical and social histories. Her practice is informed by both historical research and personal experience within institutional systems.

The exhibition invites reflection on systems of justice, power and repair.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday evening to celebrate the opening of our May-August exhibitions!

Wiradyuri Traditional Owners Central West Aboriginal Corporation welcomed everyone with a Smoking Ceremony and words by Wirribee Aunty Leanna Carr and Dinawan Dyirribang Uncle Bill Allen. Nicholas Tsoutas and Bathurst Regional Council Mayor Robert Taylor presented insightful opening speeches. Fantastic catering was supplied by Friends of The Gallery Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Society and sponsors and stocked our bar.

In our Main Gallery you will find Elizabeth Day's 'The Fragility of Goodness: The Prison on the Landscape and Other Stories'. In our Foyer Gallery explore Heather Dunn's 'Found', and across our Digital Platforms | TAFE Screens & Forecourt Projector, enjoy 'Made by You'.

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is open this weekend Saturday-Sunday 10am-2pm and entry to your regional gallery is absolutely free!

INVITATION // Bathurst Regional Art Gallery invites you to the opening of 'Made by You' on Friday 15 May 2026, 6pm - RSVP via link in bio or at bathurstart.com.au

'Made by You' gives back to our vibrant community with a digital display of visitor-made artworks on BRAG's Digital Platforms: Forecourt Projector and TAFE Screens.

The BRAG Maker Space is a dedicated room in the Gallery for visitors to get creative, further their learning, and engage deeper with exhibition themes. Since February 2024, BRAG has seen thousands of visitor-made artworks take over our Maker Space walls.

During each exhibition suite, the Maker Space contains resources for all ages about the current exhibition, and visitors are asked to create an artwork responding to an exhibition-related prompt. Materials are provided and visitors are encouraged to add their finished artwork to a common wall – which over the duration of the exhibition forms a large-scale community-made artwork.

'Made by You' stitches together over 1,200 scans of these visitor-made artworks to form a new video-collage, celebrating the incredibly creative and invaluable contributions our visitors make to the BRAG community.

2MCE turns 50! To celebrate 50th birthday on Friday 8 May, BRAG presents "2MCE FM: 50 fabulous years of community radio" on the OUT THERE Digital Platforms | Forecourt Projector.

Bathurst radio station 2MCE is celebrating an extraordinary milestone in May 2026: 50 years on air. 2MCE was the first non-metropolitan community radio broadcaster in Australia, and one of the first stations heard on the FM band in this country.

In November 1975 the then Mitchell College of Advanced Education (MCAE) in Bathurst, one of the predecessor institutions of Charles Sturt University, received an experimental licence from the federal government. The first programs were officially broadcast on 8 May 1976 from a test transmitter on the MCAE Library roof. The station now beams over Bathurst from Wahluu Mount Panorama on 92.3MHz, and since 1987 to Orange from Gaanha-bula Mount Canobolas on 94.7MHz. You can also listen to a livestream at 2mce.org.

The local community is the heart and soul of the radio station. Volunteers work both on air and behind the scenes to produce a wide variety of programming to serve the community including local news and information; radio reading service The Talking Newspaper; specialist music including alternative, country, electronic, fine music, folk, pop and rock; Indigenous programming; and multicultural programming.

During May, the station will share images from its archives to celebrate the diverse contributions made by volunteers, staff and students over 50 years of broadcasting. You can find out more about getting involved with 2MCE or showing your support by visiting 2mce.org.

FINAL DAYS // This weekend is your final chance to view Liz Bryan's 'Pattern Recognition' at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery!

Liz Bryan is a visual artist and designer working across drawing, painting, textiles, sculpture and digital media. Her practice is shaped by an ongoing interest in esoteric knowledge, mythologies and ritual, and engages with themes of womanhood, place, and the hidden or overlooked histories of feminine experience. Moving fluidly between art and craft, Liz’s work also reflects on the intersections of science, mysticism and material knowledge.

For Pattern Recognition at BRAG, Liz presents a body of work that explores the microcosmic world and the underlying geometry inherent in biological structures. Informed by sacred geometry and esoteric traditions outlined in Plato’s Timaeus, the exhibition draws on the symbolism of the five Platonic solids—earth, water, air, fire and ether—as metaphors for both physical and metaphysical systems. The relationship between microcosm and macrocosm, particularly as seen in DNA structures and natural patterning, underpins the work.

Through this work Liz explores the esoteric potential of shape, line, colour and form. Historic textile motifs, including ogee forms and repeating half-brick patterns, further inform the visual language of the exhibition. Through sculptures and paintings, Pattern Recognition reveals pattern as a connective force—linking matter, meaning and the unseen structures that shape our world.
