πΏ Today we honour Mabo Day! πΏ
On this day in 1992, the High Court of Australia made history β recognising for the first time in Australian law that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a deep, continuous, and rightful connection to their Country. This is known as the Mabo decision. ποΈ
Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Torres Strait Islander man from Mer (Murray Island), fought for over a decade to have his people's land rights recognised. He didn't live to see the victory β but his legacy changed Australia forever.
Mabo Day is a day to:
β¨ Celebrate First Nations strength & resilience
π Learn about Native Title and what it means
β€οΈ Honour the ongoing connection between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their Country.
We celebrate this day with pride and gratitude β and recommit to walking alongside our communities every single day.
