As part of National Volunteer's Week, SES celebrates WOW Day -Wear Orange Wednesday. This year, Sofala Unit invited students from Sofala Public School to come down and find out what SES is all about.

We had a Road Crash Rescue and Flood Rescue scenario set up and our "newest recruits" were able to experience a little bit of what it's like to be a Rescue operator and CFR (Community First Responder). They then participated in a dress up game and had some morning tea. During the morning they learned about the all important 132500 number and the Emergency+ app.

They had a great morning and left with a little goody bag to remember their day. Thank you to all members and friends who came to help out, and to all the students and their teacher for coming. We were all impressed at how wonderfully well behaved the students were. The future of SES is in good hands!

Over the past few days our CFR unit has been activated to several incidents across our local communities.

๐Ÿ“ On 15/5 at 4:55pm, our CFR operators were activated to a patient in Sallys Flat who had been struck by a falling branch. NSW Ambulance paramedics were in attendance and, after assessment, the patient was transported to hospital via private vehicle.

๐Ÿ“ In the early hours of 16/5 at 12:04am, our crew was activated to reports of a patient who had fallen from a moving vehicle in Sofala. While responding, our team was stood down after the caller advised they would be transporting the patient to hospital themselves.

๐Ÿ“ Later that same day at 1:55pm, the team responded to an unwell patient in Wattle Flat. NSW Ambulance attended and transported the patient to hospital for further treatment.

๐Ÿ“ On 17/5 at 8:40pm, our CFR operators were again activated, this time to an unwell patient in Turondale. NSW Ambulance also attended, with the patient transported to hospital for ongoing care.

As this week is National Volunteer Week, we would also like to take a moment to recognise and thank all volunteers within our community and emergency services. Volunteers dedicate countless hours to helping others, often leaving their families, workplaces and beds at all hours to support those in need. Our communities are stronger because of the commitment, compassion and teamwork shown by volunteers every single day.

Thank you to our CFR volunteers for your continued dedication, and to our fellow emergency service partners for the teamwork and support shown across every incident.

Over the past few days, our Sofala CFR team has been activated to a number of incidents across our local area.

On Monday at 9:26am, our crew responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle accident on the Sofala/Ilford Road. Upon arrival, we located one patient who fortunately was uninjured after reportedly falling asleep whilst driving.

In the early hours of this morning at 2:21am, our team was again activated, this time to an unwell patient in Wattle Flat. NSW Ambulance crews were also in attendance, with the patient transported to Bathurst Hospital for further treatment.

We would like to remind everyone travelling on our roads to take regular breaks, especially when fatigued, and to look after yourselves and those around you.

Late last night, just before midnight, our CFR team was activated to a medical emergency in Hill End.

Working in small communities means that often the people we respond to are not strangers โ€” they are friends, neighbours, familiar faces, and valued members of our community. Last night was one of those times.

Despite the best efforts of all involved, sadly the patient could not be revived and passed away at the scene.

Calls like these are never easy and can have a deep impact on everyone involved, especially in close-knit communities such as ours. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the patientโ€™s family, friends, and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time.

We would also like to acknowledge the responding emergency services and thank them for their professionalism, care, and support throughout the incident.

๐Ÿšจ Road Crash Rescue โ€“ Early Morning Call-Out ๐Ÿšจ

At 01:05am yesterday morning, our volunteers were activated to a road crash rescue on Sofalaโ€“Ilford Road, near the Two Mile Fire Shed.

A vehicle had collided with a large kangaroo, with two occupants involved. Both occupants were able to self-extricate from the vehicle and walk to an area with phone reception to call for assistance.

Crews responded promptly to the scene, working alongside other emergency services to ensure the situation was managed safely and efficiently.

Weโ€™d like to remind everyone travelling on our local roads, especially in the early hours, to take extra care โ€” wildlife is often more active at night and can pose a serious hazard.

A big thank you to all responding agencies for their teamwork and to our dedicated volunteers who continue to answer the call at all hours. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿšจ Busy Weekend for Sofala SES Volunteers ๐Ÿšจ

It was a fast-paced Sunday for our Sofala SES crews, with multiple activations in a short period of time.

At 12:41pm, we were activated to a road crash rescue on Sofala Road. While en route,
NSW SES Bathurst Unit and Police Rescue arrived first on scene, with the patient safely extricated and handed into the care of NSW Ambulance. Our crew was stood down shortly after.

On the way back to HQ, at 1:17pm, we were tasked to assist a motorcyclist injured on private property following a collision with another bike. As we arrived in Wattle Flat ready to support paramedics, we were quickly re-tasked again at 1:36pm to a critically unwell patient north of Sofala.

Two of our CFR operators worked closely alongside a single ambulance officer to stabilise the patient, who had been involved in a serious farm accident and was suffering significant haemorrhaging.

The Toll Ambulance Rescue
Service landed in a nearby paddock with a specialist medical team on board. After extensive on-scene treatment and stabilisation, the patient was prepared for transport to a major trauma centre in Sydney.

๐Ÿ‘ A huge effort by all emergency services involved, working seamlessly together to deliver the best possible outcome.

๐Ÿ’› Weโ€™re incredibly proud of our volunteers who continue to step up when our community needs them most.

On the evening of 16/03/26, our Sofala SES unit came together for our โ€œBetter Togetherโ€ event โ€” a special night dedicated to recognising the incredible commitment of our volunteers throughout 2025.

It was wonderful to see members and their families join us for an evening filled with great food, awards, and a bit of fun with games along the way.

Over the past year, our unit attended 37% more jobs than the previous year โ€” a huge achievement that simply wouldnโ€™t be possible without the ongoing support of our volunteersโ€™ families. Your understanding and encouragement behind the scenes make all the difference, and we thank you.๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก

A special congratulations to Huon, our Member of the Year for 2025. This award is a reflection of his outstanding dedication, including over 150 hours of training to become a qualified General Land Rescue Operator, A State Rescue Board qualification and a highly valued member of our team. Well done, Huon!

To our volunteers โ€” your dedication to serving the community does not go unnoticed. And to your families โ€” you are a vital part of our team.

๐Ÿš‘ CFR Activation โ€“ Sofala

At approximately 10am on Saturday, our CFR team was activated to a report of a patient who was very unwell in Sofala.

Upon arrival, our volunteers quickly assessed the patient, gathered vital observations, and were able to provide much-needed pain relief while waiting for NSW Ambulance to arrive.

Once on scene, NSW Ambulance paramedics continued treatment and transported the patient to Bathurst Hospital for further care.

A big thank you to our dedicated volunteers who give up their time to support the Sofala community. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿšจ Another busy week for Sofala SES volunteers ๐Ÿšจ

Our members have been out across the community over the past week responding to several incidents and providing assistance where it was needed most.

On Saturday 7 March at 11:22am, our CFR team was activated to a patient who had experienced a fall in Ullamulla. Our volunteers were able to provide pain relief and comfort while awaiting the arrival of NSW Ambulance crews from Bathurst. Once on scene, the patient was transported to Bathurst Hospital for further treatment.

On Sunday at 11:23am, our crews were again called to assist, this time to the Sofala Showground, where a young patient had sustained an injury. Our team quickly assessed the situation, splinted the injury and provided pain relief prior to transport by NSW Ambulance to Bathurst Hospital.

Later in the week, on Wednesday night at 8:33pm, a team responded to Limekilns Road where a very large tree was blocking the roadway. Volunteers worked to safely clear the hazard and reopen the road.

๐Ÿ‘ A big thank you to our dedicated volunteers who continue to give up their time to help keep our community safe.

If you see our volunteers around the area, donโ€™t forget to give them a wave!
