While you were all sleeping we were out dealing with a pile burn. This had not been properly extinguished and, even though covered in dirt, started to spread. The incident of the dog in the night alerted one of our crew to the fire right next door to his house! Bawley 1 and Bawley 7 were there first. It was all dealt with by 3:30am thanks to great teamwork in our brigade. Thanks also to Kioloa and Tabourie for their support.

It’s days like these one’s thoughts turn to soup. Don’t make your own - eat ours!! You’ll be able to choose from Moroccan lamb, lemony carrot and cauliflower, red lentil, Italian meatball … too many to list here. Sunday 7 June, 5pm. Yesterday we attended a fire that had the potential to absolutely rampage through the bush. It started with a pile burn left unattended out at Brooman 🤦‍♀️. Luckily, someone driving past had called it in. When we got there the flames were in the trees as high as the truck. A 100 metre stretch of bush along the edge of River Road. Our training kicked in: the live reel used to dampen the flames, a 38 from the truck, breach, two 25s, foam, help from Kioloa and Nelligen crews until not a whisper of smoke left. Then we found another one 🤦‍♀️. Truly, the bush is soooo dry right now that if you’re going to do a pile burn then FOLLOW THE RULES!! Notify your neighbours, check the conditions and don’t leave it unattended. This fire could have been so much worse.

Want to do a pile burn?
Follow this Safe Burning Checklist:

Before
* Check if you’re allowed to burn in your area (contact council or Fire Control Centre)
* Get a permit during the Bush Fire Danger Period (apply at least 24 hours before)
* Notify authorities via RFS website and inform neighbours at least 24 hours prior

On the Day
* Check weather conditions (fire danger rating, wind, temperature, fire bans)
* Follow permit conditions and use fire safely (clear area, monitor closely)
* Have firefighting equipment ready; call Triple Zero (000) if it gets out of control

After
* Fully extinguish the fire and continue monitoring the area
* Call Triple Zero (000) if there are any concerns
