🚒 Unit Fire Response in Baxter 🚒

Just after midnight this morning, Baxter Fire Brigade, with support from Somerville Fire Brigade, responded to a unit fire in Baxter.

Volunteer firefighters responded quickly, arriving on scene in just over 6 minutes from the time of the call. On arrival, crews were confronted with heavy smoke logged conditions throughout the unit, requiring the use of breathing apparatus (BA) to safely enter and combat the fire.

Firefighters located the seat of the fire in the rear of the unit. Investigations determined that a lithium battery powered device had gone into thermal runaway, causing the fire.

Thanks to the swift actions of crews, the fire was contained to the room of origin, preventing further spread throughout the home. While smoke damage was present, firefighters were able to stop the fire from extending to other areas of the unit.

Following extinguishment, crews carried out ventilation operations and atmospheric monitoring to ensure the property was safe. After approximately two hours on scene, the incident was deemed safe and crews returned to station.

There are two very important safety messages from this incident:

🔥 Working smoke alarms save lives. All occupants were asleep when the fire started and were alerted by their smoke alarms, allowing them to escape safely.

🔋 Never leave electrical devices or lithium battery powered equipment charging unattended, particularly inside your home or while you are sleeping. Lithium battery fires can develop rapidly and have devastating consequences.

This incident could have had a catastrophic outcome. Thankfully, working smoke alarms, quick actions by occupants, and the rapid response of volunteer firefighters helped prevent a tragedy.

🚨 Smoke Alarms Save Lives 🚨

Last night, the Baxter Fire Brigade responded to a report of a smoke alarm operating along with the smell of burning in the Baxter area.

On arrival, crews discovered that a microwave had malfunctioned and caught fire inside the home. Thankfully, the occupant had been alerted early by a smoke alarm that had been installed by Baxter Fire Brigade through the CFA Smoke Alarm Installation Program just over a year ago.

This incident could have had a very different outcome. The early warning provided by the smoke alarm gave the occupant valuable time to act, helping to prevent what could have been a devastating house fire and potentially saving both their home and their life.

This is a real life example of why working smoke alarms are so important. They provide critical early warning and can make all the difference when seconds count. CFA states that working smoke alarms save lives and offers a Smoke Alarm Installation Program to assist people who cannot obtain, install or maintain smoke alarms themselves.

Baxter Fire Brigade is incredibly proud to be part of this CFA initiative, and this incident is proof that these programs make a real difference in our community. 💙🚒

🚒🔥 Training Today Means Better Protection Tomorrow 🔥🚒

Today members of Baxter Fire Brigade joined our neighbouring brigades from Pearcedale Fire Brigade, Somerville Fire Brigade, Mornington Fire Brigade and Tyabb Fire Brigade at the Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre in Bangholme for a valuable day of training and skill development. 🚒👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

Many people only see firefighters when an emergency occurs, but behind every response are countless hours of training, learning and preparation. Days like today allow our members to practise critical skills in realistic environments, work closely with neighbouring brigades and ensure we are ready to respond safely and effectively when our community needs us most.

For our newer recruits, it was an opportunity to gain hands on experience and build confidence. For our experienced members, it was a chance to refresh skills, share knowledge and continue learning from one another. No matter how long you have been in the fire service, training never stops. 📚🔥

Working together across brigades is a vital part of what we do. Emergencies do not stop at brigade boundaries and neither does our teamwork. Building strong relationships and common operating practices helps ensure a coordinated response to incidents across our region. 🤝🚒

To our community, please know that your volunteers dedicate many hours away from their families, work and personal commitments to continually improve their skills. Every training day is an investment in keeping our firefighters safe and providing the best possible service to the people we proudly protect.

🚒🛋️ Frankston Council Hard Rubbish Collection Is Here! 🏡✨

It’s that great time of year when many of us are decluttering our homes, moving things around, and finally getting rid of those unwanted items. It’s also a great opportunity to practise your family fire escape plan and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency. 🚪🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🔥

As we all know, we put our hard rubbish out on the nature strip and somehow the magic happens! ✨😄

However, there is one important thing we’d like everyone to keep in mind.

Many homes throughout Frankston have fire hydrants located on their nature strips. Please make sure your hard rubbish is not placed on top of, in front of, or around a fire hydrant. 🚒💧

If you’re moving vehicles to make room for your hard rubbish, please also make sure you’re not parking over a hydrant. 🚗❌

When a fire occurs, firefighters need immediate access to water. A blocked hydrant can delay our response when every second counts. ⏱️🔥

Your hard rubbish collection is important, but making sure we can access water to protect your home, your family, your pets, and your valuables is even more important. 🏡❤️🐶🐱

So while you’re having a clean up, please spare a thought for your local firefighters and keep those hydrants clear. 👍🚒💧

💙 June is Men’s Mental Health Month 💙

At Baxter Fire Brigade, we know that men’s mental health deserves attention and open conversation. Many men face pressure to stay strong, push through challenges, and keep their struggles to themselves, which can make it harder to reach out for support when it’s needed most. This month is an important reminder to check in with the men in our lives, our fathers, sons, brothers, partners, mates, colleagues, teammates, and fellow volunteers.

At the same time, we also recognise the women in our community, who may be facing their own mental health challenges while often supporting those around them. Everyone deserves care, understanding, and support.

A simple conversation, a message, a coffee, or asking “Are you okay?” can make a real difference.

Mental health struggles are not always visible. They can affect our family members, friends, workmates, teammates, and fellow volunteers. Looking out for one another is a responsibility we all share.

This month, we encourage our community to take a moment to check in on those around you and to reach out if you need support yourself. Strong communities are built on connection, compassion, and people looking after each other.

Stay safe, stay connected, and remember that help is always available. 💙🚒

Over the last few weeks, our crews at Baxter CFA have attended a number of serious road crashes.

What has been truly astonishing is that we are still seeing people drinking and driving, speeding, and in some cases not even wearing seatbelts. Even more heartbreaking is when children are involved without being properly restrained.

Seatbelts save lives. It really is that simple.
They are the difference between walking away from a crash and not making it home at all.

No matter how short the trip is:
• Wear your seatbelt correctly
• Make sure every passenger is buckled up
• Ensure children are in the correct child restraint for their age and size
• Never drink and drive
• Slow down and drive to the conditions

As emergency services, we see firsthand the devastating impact road trauma has on families, friends, and entire communities. The crashes we attend are not just statistics — they are real people, real families, and real heartbreak.

Please take the extra few seconds to buckle up properly and make sure your loved ones do too.

Drive safely. Make good decisions. Help us make sure everyone gets home. 🚒

With government funding tighter than a sausage skin these days, every snag helps keep our brigade rolling, our volunteers trained, and the BBQ onions perfectly caramelised.

So grab a sausage, have a laugh with the crew, and support the volunteers who are there for the community 24/7 while the rest of us are trying to work out if the BBQ smoke means lunch is ready or the fire brigade is about to get a call. 😂
