Marine Rescue Broken Bay

Marine Rescue Broken Bay Marine Rescue Broken Bay is a 100% volunteer organisation, dedicated to saving lives on the water, around Pittwater, Broken Bay and Offshore.

We rely on donations and the generosity of local businesses. The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, established in 1937, was Australia’s oldest and largest volunteer maritime search and rescue organization. The Broken Bay Division, originally a foundation part of the Sydney region command, became a separate entity in 1947 under the leadership of Skipper Ray Weingott. Over the years, the Division oper

ated from various bases, including Church Point, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, and from 1992 , the Royal Motor Yacht Club who kindly provided dedicated facilities and berthing for our rescue vessels. In 2005, the Division moved to its own premises at Bayview Boat Ramp, with support from Pittwater Council. On January 1, 2010, the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, and Volunteer Rescue Association unified to form Marine Rescue NSW. Over the years the Unit has provided radio coverage and rescue services and contributed to the establishment of further units at Brisbane Water, Hawkesbury, and a central Radio Centre, now located at Belrose. Currently, Marine Rescue Broken Bay operates two high spec rescue boats from a dedicated wharf at Bayview. The base was rebuilt in March 2023, featuring modern crew facilities and a purpose-built training space available for public hire. Approximately 100 volunteers support the local community, collaborating closely with NSW Police (Marine Area Command), Surf Life Saving, SES, NSW Ambulance, and NSW Maritime for maritime and flood response needs.

Edited: Heading into Brisbane Water? Watch out for changed conditions in the Ettalong Channel. 👀
Over several weeks dredging has removed approx 30,000 of cubic metres of sand from the channel. Whilst the work is now complete, large scale shifts in sand within shallow waters can significantly change the behaviour of rips and bars. Proceed cautiously.

⚓Think that being crew of a Marine Rescue vessel is all about navigation and boat handling? Our volunteer training goes far beyond that.
🌊Last weekend a new group of members from units around Sydney got together to learn how to safely handle flares, self assist in the event on small fires and practice their sea survival skills. A fabulous fun filled, exhausting but immensely valuable day all round 🛟With ... Marine Rescue Middle Harbour Marine Rescue Port Jackson

Some sage advice noted on Marine Area Command's FB page🛟

"The message can not be any clearer than the warnings all agencies have put out this week. Remember it’s not just you that you are putting at risk by ignoring these messages. Stay away from the water from now and throughout this weekend, especially in the states North."

This week was National Volunteers Week!
Our unit was was very proud to be included within the 7 members chosen to represent Marine Rescue at the Premier's Volunteer Reception.
This even brings together volunteers from across a wide range of services that support our NSW communities. It recognises the selfless contribution made by them each and every day.
