🚨 Biosecurity Alert: Invasive Tropical Soda Apple Detected in Silverdale and Scenic Rim Region 🚨

Biosecurity authorities, along with Scenic Rim Regional Council, have confirmed the positive detection of the highly invasive w**d Tropical Soda Apple (Solanum viarum) within the Silverdale area in the Scenic Rim Regional Council jurisdictions. This is the first detection positively identified in the Scenic Rim Region.

The positive identification was finalized following targeted field surveillance by Biosecurity Queensland and Scenic Rim Regional Council Biosecurity Officers. Local landholders, primary producers, and residents are being urged to immediately inspect their properties and report any suspected sightings to prevent the aggressive pest from establishing a foothold in the region and surrounding areas.

Tropical Soda Apple is a Category 3 restricted matter under the Biosecurity Act 2014. It poses a severe threat to Queensland's agricultural industries, native ecosystems, and livestock. 🌱⚠️ The prickly perennial shrub can grow up to 2 metres high and forms dense, impenetrable thickets that displace native vegetation and restrict livestock access to water and pasture. A single plant can produce up to 50,000 seeds per year, which are rapidly spread by cattle, feral pigs, birds, and water.

📍 Where to look:

• Cattle yards and spelling grounds 🐄
• Dams, creeks, storm run-off locations, and sediment catchment areas 💧
• Areas where cattle congregate (shaded locations) 🌳

🔎 What to look for:

• A dense, upright shrub growing 1 to 2 metres tall.
• Stems and leaves heavily armed with straight, cream-coloured prickles up to 2 cm long. 🌵
• Broad-shaped leaves varying in size, with larger leaves equivalent to a dinner plate on more mature plants. 🍽️
• Clusters of white flowers with yellow stamens. 🌼
• Round fruit varying in size from marble to golf ball shape, with pale to dark green veining (resembling a small watermelon 🍉) and turning bright yellow when fully ripe. 🟡

Landholders are reminded of their General Biosecurity Obligation (GBO) to take all reasonable steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants under their control. Livestock movements from infested areas should be restricted, and any machinery or vehicles passing through suspected zones must be thoroughly washed down. 🚜

❌ Do not attempt to move or dispose of the plant without guidance, as improper handling can inadvertently spread the seeds.

TRAFFIC ALERT – MOUNT LINDESAY HIGHWAY

Motorists are advised geotechnical works on Mount Lindesay Highway will continue in two locations:

• Approximately 800m south of Old Mount Lindesay Road
• approximately 400m north of Hardgrave Road.

These activities will continue for approximately three weeks.
Working hours will be between 7am and 5pm.

A single lane closure and reduced speed limit of 40km/h will be in place with traffic control for the safety of road users and work crews.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for travel during this period.

Weather and site conditions can impact works, delaying start and finish schedules.

Warning area: Tamborine Mountain

Thick smoke is affecting Tamborine Mountain. This is from hazard reduction burning in King Parrot Reserve.

Smoke could be in the area for days. Protect yourself from the impacts of smoke.

What you should do:

- If the smoke is thick where you are, stay inside and close windows and doors.
- If you need medication to help you breathe keep it close.
- If you are worried about your health call your doctor or 13 HEALTH (13 432 584). If it is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) now.
- If you are affected by the smoke you may need to leave the area.
- Do not fly drones around the fire as they affect firefighting.

Impacts:

- Smoke could make it hard for some people to breathe and can cause health issues.
- Some roads may be closed or impacted by smoke. It could be hard to see. You may need to drive a different way.

🤸‍♀️The 8:00-9:00am Flow, Stretch and Relax class at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre has been cancelled for this Saturday, 5 September 2026. Class will resume as normal on 12 September.

🧘‍♀️The 8:00-9:00am Yoga for All Sizes class held on Saturdays at the Kooralbyn Community Hall has been cancelled for the remainder of this Block. Cancelled dates: 5/09, 12/09, 19/09. Classes will resume as normal next term.
