Meet one of our long-eared patients from Willuna Sanctuary! 🐴💙

Donkeys may be tough, but they still need regular veterinary care to stay happy and healthy. Donkeys commonly suffer from dental disease, metabolic conditions (EMS and cushings) as well as hoof problems.

From routine exams, dental work and hoof care, we’re here to support every member of your herd—big or small.

Hello Willuna Sanctuary community 🤍

We’re currently on the hunt for a local farrier, shearer casual farm hand and or maintenance to support us here at Willuna Sanctuary.

We’re really hoping to connect with someone heartfelt, experienced, and kind, who not only takes great care of animals but is also happy to share their knowledge and help guide us as we continue learning everything there is to know about animal care.

Our sanctuary is home to a range of much-loved rescue animals, so finding the right people is incredibly important to us 🐐🐑

If you have any recommendations or are someone who would love to be involved, we would truly love to hear from you!

📩 Please send us a message or comment below

Thank you so much for supporting our little sanctuary 🌿

Big update for the future of Willuna Sanctuary!!

4 years ago (this month) our family packed up our city lives, quit our stable jobs and moved to the country in search of living a more purposeful life. Combining this with our passion and love for animal welfare and rescue we were so grateful to have found the perfect property to start Willuna Sanctuary. The past 4 years have been both the hardest and the most amazing and rewarding years of our lives. What we have achieved and all the lives we have saved over the past 4 years will forever be one of our proudest achievements in this life.

As many of you may also know another catalyst for our big move was our beautiful miracle grandson Xander. In 2019 he came into our lives and shortly after suffered a catastrophic stroke. Our amazing daughter, his mother fought for his life when the medical professionals said he wouldn’t make it and when he did make it they told her it was best to turn his life support off as he would have profound disabilities and her life would be too hard. She chose life and as a family we made the commitment that whatever the outcome and whatever disabilities Xander may have we will give him the best life we know how. Coming to the farm and being surrounded by animals and fresh air every day has been the best experience for him too.

As Xander approaches 7 years old now, his needs are both increasing and changing and we have had to reassess both our living arrangements and where we direct our time so we can continue to give him the best possible care and opportunities (and home modifications to support his increased size and to help us as his carers)

The past 6 months to be honest have been agonising trying to work out how we can give him everything he needs whilst making sure all our rescued animals have all the time and care they need. It became evident that we could not achieve both to the high standard that is needed.

We made the heart wrenching decision to find a new family to take over Willuna and for us to take on a new opportunity that will give us the time, capacity and income to give Xander everything he needs.

The amazing news is that after a long search we have found that family!! Willuna sanctuary has officially changed hands this week and Wiluna and every single one of our beautiful furry and feathered residents will come under the care of their new custodians Megan and Jason and their beautiful family.

As we continue to hand over to them and they get to know each of our residents and all of their care needs we wanted to let all of our followers know.

I also wanted to personally take the opportunity to thank everyone near and far who have followed our journey and supported us through all the trials and tribulations that have come with starting and running an animal sanctuary!! You are amazing, we have felt so loved and now we wish Meg and Jason all the best on this new adventure. Whilst the gut wrenching grieving process has started for us we also couldn’t be happier that all our babies will continue to be safe, loved and well cared for, for the rest of their lives. That was a commitment we made to each animal as they arrived through the gates of Willuna and one we weren’t prepared to negotiate on. Meg and Jason are now dedicating their lives and making the same commitment to all Willuna residents.

This will be the last time you hear from me on this page but stay tuned and we also can’t wait to follow along with Meg and Jason and see how they continue to grow the Willuna legacy and what the future holds for both them and Willuna Sanctuary.

Thank you again!!

Theresa, Matt and family x

We made it!!! 💪🏼🥵🎉

Currently 33 degrees at 9pm BUT no more 40+ degree days on the foreseeable forecast. Back to early to mid 30’s. For all of Feb!!

8 days ago I would have said that’s hot but after this last horrific, awful, crazy week that now sounds amazing 👏

Today, I think was the worst though!!. Not the hottest it’s been in the last week but I think after so many 42-46 degree days one after another, coupled with 25-30+ degree nights, eventually enough is enough and it really takes a toll.. Most definitely on the animals but also on the humans caring from them..

The first few days (apart from the power cut when I was having intrusive thoughts of waving the white flag 😥) we were so driven to just keep going and spent most of our days braving it outside making sure all our residents were ok and doing everything we could to keep them cool.
Today, we still did what was needed and spent a considerable amount of time out there, it just felt soooo hard though…. Soooo hard!! I could hardly put one foot in front of the other 😭. Everything just seemed so hard…Walking from one enclosure/paddock to another just to see more hot, exhausted animas felt like a never ending marathon, we kept going but today I just felt so helpless. Defeated, I guess the word could be.

The animals are exhausted, many have lost the spark in their eyes and some weren’t even interested in treats they just wanted to be left alone to keep braving it out the best way they knew how too.. Of course we keep checking for the tell tale signs of serious heat stress and all in all they are ok and we are so happy we haven’t lost a single bird or animal but I don’t think us or them were going to be able to keep going much longer to be honest..

Soooo, on the bright side we made it 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼Everyone is alive 🎉

Even though at this exact moment its still hot and muggy out there as they all go to sleep for the night, i know tomorrow will be a welcome reprieve as the sun rises and doesn’t feel like it wants to kill everyone 🎉 (harsh words I know, but right now just don’t feel the ability to sugar coat what has felt like a week from hell)

I know many wildlife and animals out there in our state wont have made it through the past week and I feel for all of them and hope it’s a very long time (or preferably never) that any of us have to experience this again!!

Thank you to all those that sent their thoughts and messages and prayers for us!! It was so very much appreciated ❤️🎉❤️🙏

Day 4 of 7 almost over!!! 🥵🥵🥵

With the power back on things do feel a bit more manageable!! 💪🏼💪🏼

So far all of our Willuna residents are holding in and making the most of our sprinklers, misters and regular hosing downs, not to mention yummy zooper doopers for the pigs and ice packs for the rabbits and Guinea pigs.

Some of our beautiful local wildlife haven’t been doing as well though.
We found this sweet boy this afternoon by the pigs wallow and he was looking a bit worse for wear. This is in fact the second koala to arrive at this location exhausted, heat struck and basically looking ready to give up during this period of heatwave 😥
We are thankful they chose to come here so we could call a local wildlife rescuer to come and provide the critical care they needed ❤️

These are just two of many I’m sure are struggling out there at the moment. Poor babies..

Many have posted about putting water out (safely) and this is just a reminder if you live near bush, rural or semi rural it is really helpful to do this for all the native animals struggling through this record breaking heatwave. And if you live residential it definitely helps birds, possums and insects.. (make sure they have a way to get out of the water)

Ps I’ve heard this boy has improved and very much since going into care and hoping for a positive outcome in the days to come 🙏🙏

UPDATE: Power is back on!!! 👏👏👏 Thanks for all the support and offers of help… (and listening to me when i was way to hot to make sense of it all 🤣)

Could this actually be our worst nightmare!!

Power went off and 3pm today (was over 40 degrees at the time). We had just been around to fill up all the animals water and take frozens out to those that needed it luckily.. And then at the same time my grandson who has very severe disabilities became very ill too.

We had to cancel all our farmstay guests tonight (big financial hit) but were advised power to be restored by 9.45pm.

Now the app says 8pm tomorrow night 😭😭😭 one app says 4am and the other 8pm

To be honest how do we get though a full day of over 40 degrees with no power to run hoses and water to troughs let alone keep the house cool for humans and a sick special needs grandbaby. 😭😭

Not trying to sound negative, we always try to see the positive in everything but my goodness this is rough 😭

I know so many without power in this intense heatwave will be struggling and im sure many more than us and not much anyone can do but just needed to vent somewhere 🥵🥵🥵😭😭😭d offn o
