Beechworth's famous Ned Kelly Weekend returns from 7th to the 9th of August 2015 with a lively program of re-enactments, theatre, art, comedy, music , craft, market stalls, heritage displays and talks by leading authorities of the subject of the life and times of Australia’s most notorious bushranger. Now in its eleventh year Australia's most significant annual celebration of the Kelly legend comm

emorates the anniversary of the outlaw’s committal hearing, held in the historic Beechworth Courthouse from 6 to 11 August, 1880. With a strong emphasis on Ned Kelly, Mrs Kelly, the siege of Glenrowan, and a heritage display in the Police Paddock, this year’s festival has something for everyone.

G'Day everyone.
The times they are a-changing. At least that's what Bob said.
More than 15 years ago the first re-enactment of Ned Kelly's trial was performed in the Historic Beechworth Courthouse. It evolved as the years went by growing from a single trial to a three day event. Originally co-ordinated by the Indigo Shire, the Beechworth Historic Re-Enactment Group (BHRG) stepped up to organise. Trial re-enactments were added, various guest speakers, all four suits of armour were put on display, we even burnt down the Inn, the list goes on.
The BHRG took a break last year, to many peoples disappointment, as we needed to look at where the group was going and how we were doing it. The group was formed to re-enact the history surrounding Beechworth and of course this includes the Kelly story.
This is where we find ourselves needing to bring the Kelly story into context of the times that created the Kelly's and their contemporaries and also return to our roots.
This does not mean we are turning our back on the Kelly story or the dedicated people who have attended over the many years.
It does mean we are changing the name of the weekend and many events.
Just for now we are keeping the name under wraps until we have the new page up and running.
We still plan for a Kelly trial but which one? Well, we're not telling! Not just yet.
It will be held on the the 11th, 12th & 13th of August 2017.
At this stage there will be over a dozen re-enactment groups numbering several hundred people in period costume, living as they did in the mid to late1800's. The Police Paddocks will be crammed with, well, what else would be there?
The program is still to be finalised, so at this stage we can't give away too many clues, but there will be troopers, miners, sly grog shop raids, public arrests, fi****ms displays, bushrangers, lushingtons, a sprinkling of the unfortunate class, a nugget hunt for the minor miners, we will highlight the Chinese involvment and so much more.
So stay tuned and be informed.
Remember if you didn't hear it from us, it's a rumour!
Michael Beattie.
Secretary B.H.R.G.

A Ride Back in Time!
Victorian Mounted Police up in Beechworth today for a successful search and rescue op finding a child missing overnight in the bush at Woolshed. We caught them in front of the stables built in the Historic Police Reserve in 1871 which actually stabled the horses used in the hunt for the Kelly Gang and sit at the rear of the Courthouse where Ned was committed for killing the police at Stringybark Ck in 1880

Hi all following on from yesterdays sad post we have set up a Gofund me account to help ease Micks financial burdens in this hard time. Every little bit helps.

Its time to do what we do best, chip in and help a mate in need. Michael lost his beautiful wife Julie a week ago. Not only does he now have to deal with the incredible pain of such a tragic loss but he has the added pressure of funeral costs, car repairs and the cost of moving house. Lets help r...

This past week has been particularly hard for the BHRG, many in the Ned Kelly community and the town of Beechworth as we mourn the loss of the beautiful Julie Beattie. As the adored wife of Michael (former president of the BHRG, our Ned and Super Intendant Sadlier) Julie was a big part of the group. A woman I was proud to look up to and learn from when it was my turn to fill her shoes and take on the role of Maggie. Always there for anyone no matter what problems she was going through in her own life, she had a way of brightening even the darkest times. Michael, our love and thoughts are with you in this sad time. Julie will be forever in our hearts.... Your family at the BHRG and NKW.

Hi All, once again just reminding you all that our NKW will not be running in 2016, we hope to be back in 2017, however at this point our committee needs a well deserved break. Also please note the information on this page is accurate despite what other publications suggest.

18/05/2016

Hi All, Ian Sinclair President of the BHRG here, just to inform you all that our previous statement regarding the NKW 2016 still stands, The committee needs a break to ensure we dont burn out as in previous years, Despite other groups showing an interest in running the event this year they unfortunately left it too late to receive relevant permits etc in order for the weekend to go ahead. We plan to look at 2017 at this point and hope you all understand. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and all of our previous committee members for the support and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Great to have the Golden City Pipe Band from Bendigo in the Historic Courthouse yesterday as part of Beechworths Celtic Festival.Note whose standing in the dock! They nearly made as loud a sound as the Sympathisers at Neds Committal Hearing in 1880 but we managed to keep the roof on on both occaisions

The Beechworth Historical Re-Enactment Group would like to thank those people who have offered us support and encouragement over a very difficult period for all to endure of late. Thankfully normality and order has been restored to this Incorporated Non-Profit Organisation made up of some very long standing dedicated and hardworking people who have successfully run the highly acclaimed Ned Kelly Weekend in the past. Last year’s festival saw these stalwarts operating under extreme and unnecessary pressure from an individual trader who had recently became a member of the Group. Then following the NKW this individual waged a disgracefully vicious, bullying campaign upon it in conjunction with a concerted spiteful personal vendetta upon some of its prominent organisers, motivated by what could only be described as anarchy and a personal pecuniary interest in the festival itself. We are delighted to welcome back key members who left the Group during the course of this annus horribilis in the wake of the individual’s eminent departure. Truth and justice has prevailed to ward off the BHRG's looming extinction fortunately, and we can get now get back to the enjoying the fun and companionship that our initial purpose for being brings us, namely organising Historical Re-Enactments in the town of Beechworth and its fantastic Kelly Country surrounds
