Beechworth Fire Brigade

Beechworth Fire Brigade Beechworth Fire Brigade (CFA) is a Volunteer Fire Brigade located in North East Victoria, Australia. It was formed and called the Volunteer fire Brigade Board.

The Beechworth Fire Brigade was formed on the 20th October 1867 after a meeting at the Star Hotel in Ford Street Beechworth. The original brigade consisted of 10 paid members and 16 volunteers. Ten years later (in 1877) through lack of funds the Brigade disbanded. In 1886 because there were so many fires in the Beechworth area the insurance companies approached the council and offered to contribut

e towards the cost of equipment and running of a brigade. In the Summer of 1939 the state was covered with fires resulting in the state government in 1944 passing an act to form the Country Fire Authority, this was done in 1946. Our original station in Camp Street was built in 1892 was still being used up to November in 2013. Today we are now in a state of the art facility in Victoria Road which will service the growing town of Beechworth for the next 100 years. Beechworth Fire Brigade is in the North East of Victoria and part of District 24 which operates out of Wodonga around 40km from Beechworth. We have four vehicles to service the town which consist of 2 4WD Tankers an urban pumper and a Fire Equipment Service van. We also house the Indigo Field Command Vehicle at our station. Our volunteer members are trained in and attend both urban and rural incidents and fires all year round.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ How To Prevent Chimney Fires๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Each year, firefighters respond more and more to chimney fires as a result of poor maintenance or irregular cleaning.

Once a chimney has caught fire it has the potential to spread to the rest of the structure.
Clean your chimneys to avoid this happening

We caught up with Joel, who is also a volunteer firefighter at Bright Fire Brigade and Mark, both from Alpine Wood Heaters to tell us about some of the things to look for in a clogged chimney and what they do to clean it out

๐ŸšจKEY TIPS๐Ÿšจ
- keep items at least 1 metre away from the heater
- use a fire screen in front of an open fireplace
- only burn dry clean wood
- never leave flammable items near heaters
- when you open a fireplace, if smoke blows out and into the room, your chimney may be clogging up, get it checked / cleaned annually if you can
- if you notice creosote (blackness) around chimney areas, book a clean

Every step taken now is another step towards preparing your property and family for the coming summer season.

A huge thank you to District 24 for presenting the workshop โ€” Amanda Smith, Mary-Anne Egan, and Adele Buchanan. Your knowledge and experience were greatly appreciated by everyone who attended.

Thank you also to John for helping with setting up and packing up the day, and to Kirsty Sutherland for sharing such in-depth knowledge on landscape and vegetation types.

Most importantly, thank you to our community members for taking the time to come in and learn more about bushfire safety and preparedness.

Together, we build a safer and more prepared community. ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿšจ Incident Response โ€“ Ford Street ๐Ÿšจ

Today, your Beechworth Fire Brigade responded to a structure fire on Ford Street.

Beechworth Pumper and Beechworth Tanker arrived on scene to smoke issuing from the roof and zero visibility conditions inside. Wooragee Tanker and Stanley Tanker arrived on scene to assist, with Pumper 76 also responding.

Crews quickly discovered a small fire in the kitchen cooking area, which had caused a substantial amount of smoke throughout the structure.

Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the situation, with heavy smoke cleared after approximately 20 minutes of ventilation operations.

A great effort by all crews involved and a reminder to always stay alert while cooking in the kitchen.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Burn-Off Safety Reminder ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Itโ€™s been an unusually warm autumn, and weโ€™re still seeing active grass and scrub fires across Victoria.

If youโ€™re planning a burn-off, please take extra care:
โœ”๏ธ Make sure weather conditions are suitable (low wind, mild temperatures)
โœ”๏ธ Have sufficient water and equipment on hand in case the fire escapes
โœ”๏ธ Never leave your burn unattended
โœ”๏ธ Ensure your burn is fully extinguished before leaving

Burn-offs can quickly get out of control in these conditions, so please think twice and plan carefully.

For more information and guidelines, visit the CFA website.
