Indigo Shire is located in Victoria’s picturesque North East, a three-hour drive north of Melbourne. Our region is a rich blend of heritage architecture and pristine natural environment and includes the townships of Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen, Yackandandah, and the smaller communities of Wah

gunyah, Barnawartha, Kiewa-Tangambalanga and Stanley. In 2019, we became one of the first local government organisations in Victoria to declare a climate emergency. Inventiveness, ambition, passion and innovation runs deep in our region, ever since the discovery of gold in Beechworth attracted thousands here in 1852. By 2031, Indigo Shire will be home to many thriving communities that are healthy in every way through sustainable growth, environmental sustainability and climate action, liveability and services, connection, and wellbeing across every age group and life stage. The Draft Disability Action Bridging Plan is now on public exhibition

💬 What is it?
Our Disability Action Bridging Plan is helping guide the next steps towards a more accessible Indigo Shire while our long-term Disability Action Plan is in development.

‘Invisible' disabilities (also known as hidden disabilities or non-visible disabilities) is a broad term which can include any disability that may not be immediately apparent to others.

Some examples of 'invisible' disabilities include:
🌻 physical conditions (e.g. chronic pain, diabetes)
🌻 mental health conditions (e.g. PTSD, depression, anxiety)
🌻 neurological conditions (e.g. epilepsy)
🌻 neurodiversity (e.g. autism, ADHD, dyslexia).

We want to hear from people with disabilities, carers, families and community members about what is working well and where improvements are needed.

♻️ Neighbour‑to‑neighbour bin use

We’ve all been there, some weeks our bins fill up faster than others, and it’s tempting to pop a bit of extra rubbish into a neighbour’s bin. While it usually comes from a good place, it can cause real issues if the wrong items end up in the wrong bin.

Here’s how to keep things running smoothly on your street:
✅ Always ask permission before using someone else’s bin
✅ Only put the right items in each bin
✅ Avoid contaminating another household’s recycling (yellow) or FOGO (green) bin

A quick chat with your neighbour goes a long way and helps keep our waste and recycling systems working the way they should.

What a wonderful literary evening at Beechworth Library with award-winning Moreno Giovannoni, in conversation with Charles Dean about his acclaimed book The Immigrants.

Moreno shared fascinating insights into the post-war Italian immigrant experience, bringing to life the stories of to***co workers and their families in Myrtleford and the Ovens Valley. Recently shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, The Immigrants is a powerful and timely exploration of migration, memory, family and place.Thank you to Moreno, Charles and everyone who joined us for such an engaging evening!
