Indigo Shire Council

Indigo Shire Council 🌿 Indigo Shire Council is proud to serve the vibrant communities of North East Victoria.

Follow us for updates, opportunities, and ways to get involved in shaping the Shire we all call home. Indigo Shire is located in Victoria’s picturesque North East, a three-hour drive north of Melbourne. Our region is a rich blend of heritage architecture and pristine natural environment and includes the townships of Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen, Yackandandah, and the smaller communities of Wah

gunyah, Barnawartha, Kiewa-Tangambalanga and Stanley. In 2019, we became one of the first local government organisations in Victoria to declare a climate emergency. Inventiveness, ambition, passion and innovation runs deep in our region, ever since the discovery of gold in Beechworth attracted thousands here in 1852. By 2031, Indigo Shire will be home to many thriving communities that are healthy in every way through sustainable growth, environmental sustainability and climate action, liveability and services, connection, and wellbeing across every age group and life stage. It's that time of year again! Roadside firewood season runs until Tuesday 30 June.

If you’re keen to collect firewood from Council roadsides, there’s a few important things to know:
🔥 Only Indigo Shire residents are eligible, and you must apply for a permit.
🔥 Permits will only be issued to collect firewood for personal use on approved Council roads. Collection for commercial use is prohibited.
🔥 Our permitted roads have been selected because they have lower conservation value – you can view them here: https://bit.ly/45SbA5s
🔥 Our high conservation value roads are off limits to firewood collection.

Great to see our community engaged! 👏 Beechworth Town Hall welcomed a strong turnout this week for a drop-in information session on the Victorian Goldfields World Heritage Bid.

Locals had the chance to hear directly from the project team about the next step - the upcoming Preliminary Assessment phase - and what it means for the future of the bid. Attendees also explored the potential benefits of World Heritage listing, asked questions and connected with the material in an informal setting.

A big thank you to Trevor Budge, Susan Fayad and Lana Epshteyn for travelling to Beechworth to present the session. Learn more 👉 tinyurl.com/worldheritage-indigo

Earlier this week Chiltern Unit were called out to a fallen tree across Chiltern-Beechworth Road, a sign of what's to come this time of year.

A big thank you to Unit controller Helen, alongside SES Worker Mick, who jumped into action to get the road cleared safely. Huge thanks as well to local legend Shaggy, who pitched in with his truck and winch to help move the bigger limbs, and local police who cleared branches and helped traffic flow on safely.

It is a strong reminder of the way our community shows up for each other. We are grateful to our emergency service workers who are always there to support our community when we need it most.
