AUSTRALIA JUST PUT ITS AEGIS WARSHIP TO THE TEST — ALONGSIDE SIX NAVIES IN THE PACIFIC
Australia’s HMAS Sydney has just demonstrated why the Indo-Pacific’s air and missile-defense network is becoming increasingly important.
During **Exercise Pacific Dragon 2026 off Hawaii**, the Royal Australian Navy’s Aegis-equipped **Hobart-class guided-missile destroyer** operated alongside warships from the **United States, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Spain and Chile**.
And this wasn't simply a naval exercise.
It was a test of something much bigger:
**CAN DIFFERENT NAVIES DETECT, SHARE AND RESPOND TO COMPLEX MISSILE THREATS TOGETHER?**
HMAS SYDNEY ENTERS THE MISSILE-DEFENSE ARENA
The exercise ran from **August 6–15, 2026**, focusing heavily on ballistic missile defense, information sharing and combat-system interoperability.
For Australia, the centerpiece was HMAS Sydney.
The destroyer is equipped with the **Aegis Combat System**, phased-array radar and **SM-2 surface-to-air missiles**, giving it the ability to contribute to integrated air and missile defense missions.
The ship can protect itself and other forces against airborne threats while contributing to a wider defensive network.
And that's where Aegis becomes especially important.
Modern missile defense isn't simply about one ship firing one missile.
It is about **sensors, data links, command systems and weapons working together.**
THE U.S. BROUGHT A VERY SPECIAL WARSHIP
The exercise also featured the **USS Jack H. Lucas**, the U.S. Navy's first **Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer**.
Its major advantage?
The powerful **AN/SPY-6 radar** combined with the **Aegis Baseline 10** combat system.
That gave participating forces an opportunity to operate advanced American and allied combat systems in a multinational environment.
And this is exactly what exercises like Pacific Dragon are designed to accomplish.
Because a missile doesn't care which nation's radar detected it.
The challenge is whether allied systems can recognize the threat, share the information and respond quickly enough.
AUSTRALIA ADDS ANOTHER LAYER
Australia also deployed an **E-7A Wedgetail** airborne early warning and control aircraft.
That is significant.
The Wedgetail can provide airborne surveillance and battle-management capabilities, helping create a broader picture of activity across the battlespace.
So the exercise wasn't simply about a destroyer.
It demonstrated the potential interaction between:
**Aegis destroyers**
**Airborne early warning**
**Advanced radars**
**Tactical data networks**
**Missile-defense weapons**
**Multinational command structures**
That's the real story.
WHAT THE COMMANDERS SAID
U.S. 3rd Fleet commander **Vice Adm. Marc Miguez** said Pacific Dragon demonstrated the strength of alliances and partnerships while advancing integrated air and missile-defense capabilities across the region.
HMAS Sydney commanding officer **Commander Hayden Jenkins** said operating with allies and partners enhanced the ship's interoperability while demonstrating the crew's professionalism and lethality.
And **Lieutenant Brad Kershaw**, HMAS Sydney's Deputy Weapons Electrical Engineer Officer, said the exercise allowed the warfare team to train against complex threats in a multinational environment.
Those comments reveal the real objective:
**INTEROPERABILITY.**
FROM AUSTRALIAN SHIPBUILDING TO AEGIS WARFARE
HMAS Sydney also represents an important chapter in Australia's naval modernization.
Commissioned in **May 2020**, Sydney is the **third and final Hobart-class air-warfare destroyer** built in Australia through the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance.
The Hobart class is based on Spain's **Navantia F100** design but was adapted for Australian requirements and equipped with the American Aegis combat system.
That combination created a powerful example of multinational defense cooperation:
- Australian shipbuilding
- Spanish hull design heritage
- American combat-system technology
And now—
**integration with allied and partner forces across the Indo-Pacific.**
WHY PACIFIC DRAGON MATTERS
The Indo-Pacific is becoming increasingly contested.
China is expanding its missile and naval capabilities.
North Korea continues developing ballistic missiles.
And regional militaries are investing heavily in long-range precision weapons, advanced aircraft and increasingly complex air-defense systems.
That means Australia's ability to operate inside a **networked air and missile-defense architecture** is becoming increasingly important.
Pacific Dragon gives Australia and its partners an opportunity to practice that architecture before a real crisis occurs.
And there is another important detail.
HMAS Sydney arrived at Pacific Dragon after participating in **RIMPAC 2026**, demonstrating the Australian Navy's continuing regional operational presence.
Australia isn't trying to build its own defense network in isolation.
It is becoming part of a much larger one.
From **Hawaii to the Indo-Pacific**, Australian ships and aircraft are increasingly training alongside U.S., Japanese, South Korean and European forces.
And the future battlefield may depend less on which country has the most powerful individual weapon—and more on **which coalition can connect its sensors, commanders and weapons fastest.**
HMAS Sydney just demonstrated that Australia wants to be part of that network.
**One ship. Six partner navies. One increasingly connected missile-defense battlespace.**
And the question is no longer simply:
**“Can Australia defend itself?”**
It's becoming:
**“Can Australia help defend the network?”**
