Animal Farm! 🐴 🐷 🫏 🎭

All excursions are created equal, but some are more equal than others.

Our Year 11/12 Drama class were lucky enough to see Animal Farm at the Canberra Theatre Centre, as part of their unit “Communicating Meaning in Drama”. They were amazed at the theatricality of the story, and its relevance to the world as we know it today.

Sociology students were treated to a special guest lecture from renowned Professor, Michelle Ryan from ANU and the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership this week. Professor Ryan told us about her research into the phenomenon of the glass cliff, a process where women are promoted into positions of leadership in times of crisis. We also heard about ways organisations and broader society can increase gender equality in Australia and the world.

It was a fascinating and deeply engaging talk, with students asking many thought-provoking questions demonstrating their depth of knowledge and interest in the topic. Thank you so much Professor Ryan!

Just because skills week has finished doesn’t mean skills have stopped being learnt. Yesterday saw science students undertake bird surveys and outdoor recreation students went paddling and bushwalking.

We ended this week with a wonderful celebration for Wear It Purple Day! Students and staff showed their support for the LGBTQIA+ community while enjoying delicious rainbow cookies and cake, adding to our giant rainbow flag artwork, and applying copious temporary tattoos. Thanks to the Student Leadership Group for their amazing baking efforts 💜🌈

Industry Skills Week Student Spotlight – James Morton
🧡 Finalist for ACT ASbA of the Year

For today’s National Skills Week feature, we are celebrating Year 12 powerhouse James Morton! James has been shortlisted for the 2026 ACT Training Awards ASbA of the Year, serving as the ultimate example of how combining VET qualifications in school with a hands on ASbA can completely transform a student’s trajectory.

James didn’t just choose one vocational route, he went all in on both; Working as an apprentice at Birrigai Outdoor School, completing his Certificate III on the job and enrolling in VET Outdoor Recreation subjects here at UC SSC Lake Ginninderra.
Practical learning provided the exact purpose, drive, and industry focus he needed to engage and pursue his Year 12 Certificate in addition to providing a strong foundation for his future career.

At Birrigai, James leads outdoor learning for ages preschool through college, running campfire sessions, managing safety risks, and belaying on Challenge Ropes courses. At school he balances intensive VET training camps, demanding workplace shifts, and school basketball, all while maintaining solid grades across all his subjects.

Join us in congratulating James on this massive achievement and wishing him the best of luck at the ACT Training Awards which will be announced on the 3rd September!

National Skills Week is all about discovering the pathways that build practical expertise, industry connection, and real-world confidence! We are proud to offer a dynamic range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications right here at school.

With over 180 of our students currently studying across these qualifications, our pathways equip young people with hands-on skills across a variety of thriving sectors:

Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation
Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation
Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership
Certificate II in Hospitality
Certificate II in Sport and Recreation

From the workshop and the kitchen to sports facilities and the great outdoors, our students are actively gaining nationally recognised qualifications that set them up for success. Today, we celebrate their dedication to building skills for the future!

Sage Molchanoff (Year 11) has been at Youth Parliament last week, chosen as one of three students in the ACT to attend, representing the electorate of Canberra. The five-day program brought together one student from each federal electorate to learn about Australia’s parliamentary system, take part in mock sittings and debates, and meet politicians and other people working in and around Parliament House.

In an interview with NITV, Sage encouraged other young people to take an interest in politics: “I think young people really need to take an interest in democracy because it’s our future”
