Bell Rural Fire Brigade

Bell Rural Fire Brigade Bell Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade We respond to such incidents as bush fires, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and search and rescue.

Bell Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade is a unit of the NSW Rural Fire Service looking after the north western corner of the Blue Mountains National Park. Whilst the township of Bell is a tiny community the Brigade's geographical
responsibility extends from Mt Victoria in the south to Clarence in the west and Mt Wilson in the east. Due to a Bell only having a small number of residents, brigade volunteers are drawn from neighbouring towns such as Lithgow and Blackheath.

Bell brigade had a wonderful time on Saturday as several of our members along with the wonderful members of Lawson Rural Fire Brigade manned the finish line Aid Station at the 6 Foot Track Marathon.
It was a busy day handing out lots of watermelon and refreshments as the amazing runners crossed the finish line.

Post from one of our members Leigh Urquhart-
It was on this day 12 months ago that our small community of Bell and our neighboring communities of Clarence and Dargan were devastated by the fiercest fires seen in at least a generation.
The day started calmly but full of heavy portent as we knew that the fires around us were heading our way.
At about 1:30pm the Gross Valley fire launched the first attack on Bell when it jumped the Bell’s Line of Road near the weigh station.
Great work from all Brigades present rounded that fire up with no properties lost.
Any sense of relief was short lived however as a savage conflagration developed to the West of us and had us firmly in it’s sights.
Around 3:00pm we were hearing reports that Clarence and Dargan had been hit hard with heavy property losses.
The Strike Team at Bell prepared itself.
However no amount of preparation could have saved us from the fiery tidal wave that launched itself across the rail corridor and crashed mercilessly upon the houses of Bell.
Our world turned to smoke and flame that was relentless in its attack. The radio was busy with crews reporting overruns.
The fire front only took about ten minutes to pass through, but it’s destruction was significant.
Crews continued to busy themselves protecting properties well into the night.
5 houses were lost in Bell that afternoon, but more were saved and thankfully nobody was hurt.
To those that were there, this is a day they will never forget - although I’m sure that many, like me, wished they could.
Respect to you all!

Saturday was a very difficult day for our small village in Bell when we came under heavy impact of fire and were overrun not once but twice in one day. Sadly we lost 5 houses and many sheds but are happy to report that we were able to save many more and no lives were lost.

We would like to thank all the brigades and strike teams that were sent to help us over the past few days from NSW RFS AND NSW Fire and Rescue and a big thank you to Mt Wilson/Mt Irvine and Wilberforce brigades for their grateful food donations that will help feed our residents for the next couple of days while we try to restore some normality back in our town.

From 8am Saturday 14 December, the Bells Line of Road will be closed between Mt Wilson Road and the Darling Causeway.

The road closure is expected to remain in place for up to four days.

This will allow firefighters to undertake backburning operations during milder conditions, in an effort to contain the Gospers Mountain fire.
