A new national warning system called AusAlert will be used across Australia from October 2026.

AusAlert will be able to send warning messages to your mobile device as push notifications during:
• Natural hazards such as bushfires, floods, and tsunamis
• Public health emergencies
• Biosecurity incidents
• Security threats

Before the system is introduced, it will be tested.
In Victoria, a local test will happen in the Geelong suburbs of Highton and Belmont on Thursday 18 June at 2 pm, followed by a national test on Monday 27 July at 2 pm.

More about the tests and rollout of AusAlert will be shared on the VicEmergency page in the coming weeks.

The refinery fire in Corio last week is a reminder that emergencies can happen at any time, day or night. When the fire was reported, an incident icon immediately appeared on VicEmergency. Once firefighters arrived and assessed the situation, a warning was issued.

As the situation developed, the warning was upgraded to a Watch and Act, telling people to stay indoors. Regular updates were provided as information became available, and people were later told when it was safe to resume normal activity.

All these updates could be found on the VicEmergency app. To get them, you need to keep notifications on. Check that your watch zone settings are up to date with the things you want to know about.

While you’re winding your clocks back tonight or tomorrow morning, don’t forget to also check your smoke alarms.

When checking, installing, or replacing your smoke alarms, CFA and FRV recommend -

🔥 Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom and living area.
🔥 Smoke alarms must be located between each bedroom area and the rest of the house. Install a smoke alarm on each level of the house.
🔥 Recommend the use of smoke alarms powered by a 10-year long-life battery.
🔥 All smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years.
🔥 Smoke alarms should be interconnected, so that when any alarm activates, all smoke alarms will sound.
🔥 Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling at least 30cm from the wall.
🔥 Smoke alarms should be tested monthly. Press the test button until the alarm sounds.
🔥 Smoke alarms should be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner at least once a year.
🔥 Replaceable batteries in a smoke alarm need to be changed yearly.

Did you know in South West Region we are still within our Fire Danger Period?

During the declared Fire Danger Period, fire restrictions come into force. This means you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements.

If you don't obtain a permit, you could be breaking the law and may be prosecuted.

More about restrictions and what you can and can't do: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/total-fire-bans-fire-danger-ratings/can-i-or-cant-i

CFA declares the Fire Danger Period for each municipality (shire or council) at different times in the lead up to the fire season. It depends on the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and other local conditions.
