The National Anti-Scam Centre has launched a new project to tackle an emerging scam called scambling.

These scams use fake online pokies or casino-style games to steal money and personal information.

Scammers often offer bonuses, small wins or rewards for inviting friends to make the games look real.

Scambling can spread quickly through trusted family and community networks, and over 45% of reports to Scamwatch have come from First Nations Australians.

Scams Awareness Week starts on 24 August.
This year's theme, 'No One's Just a Number’, highlights the real people behind scam statistics and encourages businesses to "Stop. Check. Protect." before responding to requests for money or sensitive information.

Small businesses continue to be targeted through fake invoices, phishing emails, payment redirection scams and impersonation attempts. Even a single scam can affect cash flow, operations and reputation.

SCAM SAFETY CHECKLIST
To help you protect your business:
• Verify payment requests, especially if bank details have changed.
• Enable multi-factor authentication on business accounts.
• Train staff to recognise scam emails, texts and phone calls.
• Keep software, devices and security systems up to date.
• Use strong, unique passwords for business systems.
• Back up important business data regularly.
• Stop and verify unexpected requests for payments or sensitive information.
