APPEAL FOR INFORMATION - BARJARG BURGLARY

Detectives from the Benalla Criminal Investigation Unit are seeking public assistance following a burglary and theft of motor vehicles in Barjarg.

The incident occurred in August, with tools, machinery and motor vehicles stolen from a residential property.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Barjarg area around the time of the incident.

Any information can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestoppers.com.au.

POLICE CONTINUE TO DETECT HIGH RISK BEHAVIOURS ON MANSFIELD ROADS

Mansfield Police continue to provide a dedicated presence on our roads in Mansfield and Murrindindi shires. Over the weekend Mansfield Police detected a total of 47 traffic offences.

🚔 6 Drivers were detected for excessive speeds resulting in loss of licence and a further 27 drivers received infringement notices for speed related offences.

Of significant concern were two high speed offences:
🏎️ One driver was detected travelling at 152km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Maroondah Highway and when intercepted police identified an unrestrained child present in the vehicle.

🪪 A suspended driver was detected travelling at 139km/h in a 100km/h on Mount Buller Road, Merrijig. Both drivers will be required to attend court at a later date

🚶‍♂️3 drink driving offences were detected including one driver who had his vehicle immediately impounded and his licence immediately cancelled after furnishing a breath test result of 0.19%.

🛑 A driver was intercepted after failing to stop at a stop sign and provided a positive result to cannabis.

🗻 The majority of offending drivers advised police they were visitors to the region. Mansfield Police urge drivers travelling to the drawcard Alpine Region to drive to the weather and road conditions and be alert on unfamiliar roads.

👮Police vow to continue to crackdown on drivers who demonstrate a blatant disregard for the road rules and safety of other road users.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES AFTER TWO ARRESTED

On Friday the 28th of August 2026 police arrested two people and recovered stolen property following an investigation into a burglary at a school on Apollo Street in Mansfield.

A 30 year old female and 37 year old male have been interviewed in relation to the incident. Police are urging another male and female who were present on the school grounds on Sunday the 23rd of August 2026 at the time of the burglary to come forward to assist police with their enquiries.

MORE POLICE ON PATROL OVERNIGHT

More police are now on patrol overnight across the Benalla Police Service Area.

From 11pm, Benalla Police Station reception closes until 7am, allowing members who would traditionally be stationed inside the police station to instead be deployed on proactive patrols throughout the community.

The change means increased police visibility and more frontline resources out on the road, helping to prevent crime, identify suspicious activity and respond when needed.

If a crime is occurring or immediate police assistance is required, call 000.

On this day, one year ago, two of our colleagues were tragically killed in the line of duty.

Today, and every day, we remember Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart and the tragedy that occurred in Porepunkah on 26 August 2025.

We thank everyone for their support and solidarity on this difficult day.
