Can we please have a round of applause - actually make that a standing ovation - for The Blurbs! The gold standard Bendigo-born-and-bred Book Week band has done it again. Min, Sean, Josh and Sam have just performed their 17th riotous show for the week.

After playing to local schools they finished their tour tonight with a sold-out show for families in View St.
Huge thanks to these multi-talented musos for the laughs, the tunes, the costumes, and ultimately for fuelling a love of reading in kids. That'll change the world we reckon.

This special performance was a partnership with City of Greater Bendigo.

A symphony of stories filled the library this morning. Members of the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra joined us for a very special Book Week storytime and dress up parade with families. Geordie sent the soulful notes of brass instruments through the space, Emily played strings and Hani donned the bass drum to become an honorary orchestra member. Thanks to all the children who dressed up, came along and enjoyed the fun. Our hearts are full on this The Children's Book Council of Australia 80th anniversary Book Week.

Have you had a chance to browse some of the Tanner Collection yet?

Laura spotted one of her most cherished childhood books and shared it with her Baby Rhyme Time group last Friday. There were tears. Not from the babies, but from the parents who were touched by this lovely story 🥰

Here’s what Laura had to say about Sophie by Mem Fox:

‘This was the first book I could read all on my own, which was kind of a big deal to 4-year-old me!

It really resonated with me when my grandmother passed away, and even now, when I pick it up, the tears spill.

I thought I would never see a physical copy of this book again, and having the Tanner Collection preserve this piece of our literary history is wonderful.’

You’ll find some of this special collection on Level 1 of the library. Pop upstairs for a read when you’re next in.

Happy 80th Book Week Bendigo - did you know legendary librarian Miss Tanner? We're celebrating her legacy on the dual 80th anniversary of her career. In this story, Mary Melis and Viv Newton take us time travelling via the Tanner Collection - one of Australia's most significant holds of historic and contemporary children's books, which features 80 years of CBCA Book Week winners.

Lee from Franklin Projects has handed us back the front door key!

From Saturday, August 22, you can again come into the library via the Hargreaves Street sliders. After four months of renos the space is looking great, and now features new loos and so much more.

Thanks to the builders for their expert work and care on the project. We look forward to further acknowledgements in time, but just wanted to let you know we're now officially accessible from either end of the building.

How to entice an IT manager and a librarian to strike a pose for ? Promise them a free tee! Thanks to Dave and Russell for donning the official merch in honour of this week’s celebration of all things science. We’ve been exploring STEAM concepts via LEGO across our branches this week, putting the fun into learning, as we do, across all facets of library life.

On first flick of our new program, librarian Laura has picked the pop-up planetarium as her must-do event.
We’re teaming up with Discovery Centre Bendigo to bring the night sky into the library this spring.
Laura says any quality, free, educational, fun-filled activity that brings families into the library gets her vote.
Other highlights coming up are visiting authors Pip Williams, Bob Brown and Chris Hammer.
It’s a bumper program packed with delights. Get your copy in branch now, or on our website.
