When gold was first discovered in Bendigo in 1851, it sparked decades of gold mining worth billions of dollars. The Bendigo goldfields soon became the richest in Australia with 5,600 gold mines producing almost 700,000kg of gold. Central Deborah Gold Mine is a quartz-reef mine which operated for just 15 years between 1939 and 1954. Although a relatively short time frame, during this period the min

e produced 29,865 ounces (929kg) of gold. Central Deborah Gold Mine has been preserved and continues to share its rich history with visitors. Today, you can descend to the depths of Bendigo and explore the honeycomb of hidden tunnels with one of our expert tour guides.

Check out this amazing birds-eye view from on top of our Poppet Head! 👀😮

Staff members Baz and Phil ventured roughly 20 meters above Bendigo to have a look at our sheave wheels and how they may be incorporated into our Revitalisation Project.

Sheave wheels were a key part of how miners would enter and exit Central Deborah Gold Mine when the mine was operational. Winding rope was wound around the sheave wheels connecting the miners cages in the original shaft to the winder engine, where the Winder Driver would use a bell signal system to know when to lower and raise the cages! 😍

Did you know that many of Bendigo’s civic parks and sporting reserves are built on historical mine shafts! 😮

As Bendigo’s population has grown over the years urban development has seen historical mine sites throughout Bendigo repurposed as hockey grounds, football ovals, baseball fields, golf courses, playgrounds, swimming pools, and even ornamental lakes.

Several of these have retained the name of the mine on which they are situated, including the Londonderry Reserve which is located near the Central Deborah Gold Mine on the corner of Myrtle Street and Creek Street North. ✨

Pictured below is the Londonderry Mine when in operation, circa 1913. This mine was worked down to a depth of 884m and produced at least 528kg of gold. Note the partially constructed Sacred Heart Cathedral in the background.
