It’s often the quiet, simple moments that make the biggest difference.

Through Bendigo Health’s pilot Corporate Volunteer Program, participants are spending time with patients, sharing conversations, offering comfort and showing how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

For Kylie Macumber, volunteering in palliative care offered a powerful perspective. Sitting with a patient who simply wanted company, holding their hand and listening became one of the most meaningful moments of her experience, with even the smallest acts of comfort feeling like a privilege.

After 13 years at Bendigo Health, Social Worker Teagan Anketell was looking for a new challenge that would fit around life as a mum of two. What she found was the Allied Health Leave Reliever Pool Pilot, an exciting opportunity to work across a range of health services throughout the Loddon Mallee region, build new skills and broaden her clinical experience.

As the first clinician to join the reliever team, Teagan is embracing the adventure and encouraging others to explore what's possible.

When Deanna Keogh started her nursing career in 1979, student nurses still wore hats and end-of-life care was very different from what it is today.

Across 47 years, she helped shape hospice and palliative care in our region, bringing compassion, dedication and leadership to every role she held.

From the early days of hospice care through to today’s specialised services, Deanna has supported thousands of patients and families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Her legacy is one of honesty, dignity and ensuring people feel informed, supported and cared for at the end of life.

We thank Deanna for the compassion, honesty and care she has shown every patient and family, and for everything she has given to our community, and wish her all the best in her well earned retirement.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the mums and family connections that are part of the Bendigo Health community.

Across our workforce of more than 5,400 staff and volunteers, many families share a connection through a shared commitment to caring for the community.

Tracy Harrip introduced daughters Felicity and Chloe to nursing from a young age while working in Hospice and Palliative Care, with both now following their own nursing journeys through Bendigo Health. They credit their mum’s passion, strength and dedication to caring for others as shaping the paths they have taken today.

For Joe Lloyd, mum Michelle’s care and empathy have always been “a massive inspiration”. Michelle reflects on how meaningful it was hearing Joe speak about helping the community and finding purpose through his work at Bendigo Health during COVID.

Sally Harris says having her mum volunteer at Bendigo Health has given her a deeper understanding of Sally’s day-to-day role and valuable insight and feedback. She credits her mum’s strong work ethic and belief in getting involved and contributing as qualities that continue to shape her leadership today.

Working at Bendigo Health with daughter Maddi is something Kate Fuller considers a privilege. Maddi describes her mum as one of the hardest working people she knows, always putting others before herself and being there whenever her family needs her. She says Kate’s caring and supportive nature means she can always count on her, no matter what.

Katrina Bales says being connected through Bendigo Health with daughter Grace has created a shared understanding of each other’s day-to-day lives and experiences.

Lachy Furness says mum Jan’s caring nature is one of her greatest qualities, and that it’s special knowing they both contribute to the same community and shared purpose through Bendigo Health.

Today, we celebrate all the mums, children and families connected through Bendigo Health. Thank you for the care, support and compassion you bring to our organisation and community every day.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Still going strong at 100!

Earlier this week, Golden Oaks Nursing Home resident Jean Walker celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and fellow residents.

Born in Eaglehawk into a family of 14 children, Jean worked in Bendigo and Melbourne before moving to Sydney to begin a career in nursing, caring for new mothers and babies.

After breaking her hip on the morning of her 99th birthday, Jean made the move to Golden Oaks, where she now enjoys the care and support she needs following treatment at Bendigo Hospital.

One of the highlights of Jean’s milestone birthday was receiving a congratulatory card from King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Happy, sharp and full of spirit, Jean is already looking forward to her next birthday, although she jokes she will have to wait until her 105th birthday for another royal card.

Happy 100th birthday, Jean.

Today, we recognise our midwives on International Day of the Midwife.

Midwives support women and families through pregnancy, birth and the early days of new life, building strong and trusted connections every step of the way.

At Bendigo Health, their care spans the full maternity journey, from the Women’s Health Clinic and the Pregnancy Care Centre through to the Birth Suite and Women’s Ward, and into the Special Care Nursery and the Early Parenting Centre. At every stage, they provide consistent care, guidance and reassurance, and also support our graduate midwifery program.

Thank you to all of our dedicated midwives for the vital role you play in caring for the next generation and supporting families in our community.
