Winter is upon us. When you're rugging up, remember your water meter might need some love too.

When temperatures drop to zero, your water meter and pipes can freeze.

You can reduce the risk by covering your water meter with a blanket, an old beanie, a bucket or plastic box overnight.

If they do freeze, the best thing to do is to wait for them to defrost naturally. You can pour lukewarm water on them to help them along, but never use hot or boiling water to thaw pipes as this increases the chance of them bursting.

Following the successful passage of the Victorian Water Act 1865, funds eventually trickled through to commence the giant Malmsbury Reservoir.

Its construction employed hundreds of navvies, but soon became the centre of notorious wrangling between shady contractors and their interfering and inept government supervisors.

Before cleaning work starts in your street, remember to turn your water meter off at the ‘stop tap’ to prevent any sediment entering the pipes in your home. Your stop tap is located on the street side of your water meter.

We regularly clean your water mains using a mix of compressed air and water pushed through the pipes from fire hydrants in your street. Sometimes referred to as ‘air scouring’, the process is used to remove natural build-up and ensure the quality of your drinking water.

You will receive a letter with more information if cleaning is happening near you.
