RIP

We have been made aware of a fellow firefighter who has passed away overnight.
This colleague was well known to many throughout FRNSW and the loss has touched many.

Considered an on duty death, this firefighter passed after a long battle with cancer.

All our thoughts and condolences go to the family, friends, crewmates and all affected by this loss.

Station Officer Keith Sanchez was captured spending a quiet moment with a teenager who was one of ten occupants who had just lost their possessions in a serious house fire in Macquarie Fields earlier this week.

Smoke alarms installed by FRNSW Firefighters last week undoubtedly saved the lives of all 10 occupants.

The photo captures a part of a Firefighter’s job that most wouldn’t think about but is as important as any of the operational tasks we complete.

While it’s important that we are good at putting out fires, it’s equally important that we also look after the people who have been impacted by emergency incidents.

The thing that young woman needed more than anything was to be supported with care and compassion.

It is a credit to Keith and to the culture of FRNSW that in amongst all the demands of a busy fire scene our people look after those who have been affected. The teenager’s mother was very grateful for his supporting words and so am I.

For all of us it is timely reminder as we approach the start of winter and Smoke Alarm Action Day on Saturday to check you have working smoke alarms at home. It can be the difference of keeping your loved ones alive.
