Yesterday, AFAC News released the Bushfire Seasonal Outlook for Winter. NSW has experienced a warmer and drier autumn than usual, with less rainfall than normal.

While parts of the state received some rainfall in mid to late May, it has not been enough to significantly improve the long-term rainfall deficits or ongoing dry conditions. As a result, many areas remain unusually dry, with some parts of northern NSW already experiencing drought conditions.

Looking ahead, forecasts suggest winter is also likely to be drier than average, particularly later in the season, with warmer daytime temperatures expected across much of the state. These conditions, especially across northern, central and eastern NSW, are increasing the risk of bushfires this winter, including fires that may be more difficult to control.

Reposting our Winter Fire Safety Tips after a spate of house fires in the district and across the state over the last 7 days. Please share and discuss with your family and stay safe. Thank you 🚒

Winter Fire Safety Tips;
1. Have working smoke alarms, check locations, check they're working, change the batteries.
2. Have an escape plan, consider exits other than the front or back door and ensure the whole family knows.
3. Close internal doors when going to bed, close before you doze.
4. Clean chimney flues annually
5. Don't leave heaters, open hearth fires or other heating appliances running when going to bed.
6. Clean clothes dryer lint filter before every load.
7. Don't use out door gas heaters indoors.
8. Don't overload power boards, heaters should be plugged in directly to a wall socket.
9. Charge e-bikes or similar outside.
10. Any outdoor burning off of piles or similar must be notified and supervised at all times.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mums across our communities and within the NSW Rural Fire Service. 🌸

Today, we acknowledge and thank the mothers who dedicate so much of themselves, not only to their families, but also to supporting and protecting their communities through service.

Across the South Eastern Area Command, there are so many mums that play an important role in every part of our organisation and those that stand beside family members who serve, your contribution does not go unnoticed.

Thank you for the care, strength, resilience and commitment you show every day.

We hope today provides an opportunity to spend time with loved ones and reflect on the important role mothers and carers play in our lives.

Happy Mother’s Day. 💐

As we move into the colder months, fire agencies often see an increase in house fires as residents use their fireplaces and heaters to stay warm. With temperatures dropping and possible snow forecast across parts of the state in the coming days, it’s important you know how to stay safe.

Remember, you won’t smell smoke while you’re asleep, so make sure your bleeping smoke alarms are working. A working smoke alarm can save your life and give you and your family valuable time to escape a burning home.

For our followers in the U.S.A. and Canada, it's now your time to get prepared and to prepare your home for the wildfire season. Preparing your property is key, just like it is here, for both your home and for your families safety. By cleaning up combustible materials from around the home and creating defendable space, you're helping your local firefighters too.
Talk to your local fire department for more information.
