This is Associate Professor Bryan Chan, one of our medical oncologists bringing world-class cancer research right here on the Coast. 🌴🌊

"My commitment has always been to support strong multidisciplinary research that improves holistic care."

Dr Chan is one of our senior clinicians who was recently appointed to a conjoint clinical research leadership role in partnership with Griffith University.

His research focuses on improving outcomes for people with lung and rare cancers, with a particular commitment to ensuring that people from regional and rural areas have timely, high quality and equitable care. 🫁

Together with the oncology team, Dr Chan has already run 26 cancer trials since 2020, providing access to cutting-edge therapies closer to home, while supporting numerous junior medical staff in their post-graduate training and research.

We’re so lucky to have Dr Chan helping us build a sustainable research program that is genuinely homegrown and focused on the needs of our growing community. 🤍

This here is Meghan, our new Director of Social Work!

Hi Meghan, you’re new around here?

“Yes, I am. I’ve come from Victoria, where I was the Head of Social Work, Spiritual Care and Interpreters. Before I accepted my role here at Sunshine Coast Health, I had never visited the Sunny Coast, so this is a completely new and exciting adventure for me and my family.”

Meghan has always worked in healthcare, where she’s held various teaching, research and leadership roles. And speaking of research, she clearly LOVES it. Having undertaken her PhD, she’s had opportunities to develop specialised training modules for Victorian Health Services, undertake a study tour of the UK and strengthen professional collaborations both nationally and internationally.

We’re most excited to have Meghan sharing her experience and knowledge with us on the Coast, where she’ll lead our social work team.

And she’s most excited to mentor and empower our people to be their best, so they can give their best. 💛

And outside of work, what are you most excited for?

“Exploring and immersing myself in the beautiful Queensland lifestyle.” 🌴🌊

If you've noticed some fun socks around our facilities today, it's all part of Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day. 🧦🩺

What began as a simple act of wearing colourful or mismatched socks has grown into a global movement that encourages open conversations about mental health and helps reduce stigma about asking for help within the medical profession.

Thank you to our staff for the care, compassion and dedication you bring to your work each day. 💗

🔍 Research spotlight 💡

SCUH Oncology Nurse Practitioner Cassandra Mazza has recently been involved in some awesome vital research about the cancer risks of va**ng.

She co‑authored a major qualitative review examining growing evidence on ni****ne-based e‑cigarettes and their likely potential to cause cancer.

The review brings together the strongest evidence to date showing how ni****ne‑based va**ng may contribute to cancer development through biological and cellular mechanisms.

Cassandra says the risks of to***co smoking are well established, and we are also aware that there is an increased risk of lung cancer among to***co smokers who also use ni****ne-based e-cigarettes, known as ‘dual users’.

While more evidence and long-term data is needed, Cassandra says this research is an important first step in identifying the potential risks associated with ni****ne-based va**ng.

Working closely with people affected by cancer at the Adem Crosby Centre, Cassandra is passionate about empowering patients to improve their health through both to***co smoking and va**ng cessation.

We’re so proud to see her involved in this important research. 👏

🚭 Today is World No To***co Day, an awareness day about the risks of to***co and ni****ne based products.
