Guided Group Coach Commentary Tours, Village Walking Tours & Speaker Engagements My name is Sue Collins, I am a Leura Local who is proud to bring my love of the Blue Mountains to visitors. During the COVID lockdowns I took the opportunity to invest in my passion for Australian history with my two foundation tours, The Leura Story Walking Tour, and the Katoomba Story Walking Tour. This process has

taught me to appreciate my village and how fortunate I am to call Leura home. Mountains Tales has grown to offer coach commentary tours for a variety of groups coming to the Blue Mountains; whether conference and events, social groups, or educational tours, I draw on my previous work experience to deliver the best experience for my groups. Having worked in Sydney in the corporate arena in Sales and HR, I understand what goes into a successful corporate getaway; time to chill, form connections, learn and have fun and laughter along the way. My private Social Group Day Trips are always full of laughter, no matter how many times you have visited the Blue Mountains, there are many stories to learn and enjoy, making for a memorable daytrip. My Educational Tours take me back to my childhood, as I learned the colonial stories of Sydney, and my family connection to our not-so distant past. Learning is achieved through storytelling and role play with the spectacular Blue Mountains as our classroom. During my tours I share the stories of the Blue Mountains, and a little of myself. My love for community; as a SES volunteer I enjoy giving back to my community in times of need, I am the coordinator of ANZAC Day services in Leura and involved in both Leura and Blue Mountains heritage committees. As a qualified adult educator, I know my guests will gain a better knowledge and understanding of the Blue Mountains. The Mountains Devil ride could carry 15 guests, deep into the valley to meet up with the Federal Pass walking track.

We know this site today as the Scenic Railway, with its famous 52" angle, on the former old coal mining incline, which was built by hand in 1881.

Did you catch the colonial news in this weeks Blue Mountains Gazette ?

From 1845 - 1849 Captain Bull (of Bull's Camp Woodford fame) oversaw a convict stockade in Blackheath. The convicts were responsible for maintaining the Western Road, until 1849, when NSW stopped bringing convicts to the colony.

To think remains like this are still be uncovered, is remarkable.

The Caves Express departing Central railway station c 1930's

Imagine stepping aboard the steam train at Sydney Central, climbing up the Mountains, carrying holidaymakers to Mount Victoria. After an hours break for lunch at the Railway Refreshment Rooms, you would continue the journey by motor coach towards the spectacular Jenolan Caves.

And this wasn't just any train! The Caves Express became famous for its speed. In 1933, it was reported to have reached 69.25 miles per hour, or 111 km / hour in today's language!

Sir Henry Parkes and his second wife, Eleanor

I have been working some research on Parkes in the Blue Mountains, for a future private tour. We know him as the Father of Federation, though he did not survive to see that event occur, but he was also Premier of NSW 5 times over a period of five years.

One of his highest achievements was the Public Instruction Act of 1880, free compulsory education for all children, aged 6-14, across NSW. This was one of the worldโ€™s first commitments to ensuring that educating young people was the responsibility of society.

Thank you Sir Henry, for not only believing in the future of Australia, but understanding that the education of our children was the first step.
