Saturday 23 May saw our latest group of recruits successfully complete their Firefighter 1 & 2 assessment. The rain held off long enough for them to show their newly acquired skills to the assessors. A big congratulations to Brad, Jodi, Lili, Ethan and Bianca for a great effort. We look forward to having them on the truck and hope their stay with Boambee is a long and rewarding one.

Our deepest sympathy to the families, friends and colleagues of the brave Marine Rescue volunteers who lost their lives trying to save others. May they rest in peace.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

On Wednesday 15 April, Boambee RFB was tasked as part of a Coffs Coast Strike Team to Ellem's Quarry Road, Nana Glen sector of the Bagawa Fire. We worked with Coffs Coast Deputy Group 3 along with Moonee, Red Hill, Karangi, Repton, Bonville, Sherwood Creek, Ulong and Coramba brigades to conduct backburning operations to hold the fire along the eastern flank.
It is unseasonal to have fires at this time of the year. Along with a fair bit of hazard reduction taking place there is quite a lot of smoke around the city and surrounding areas of Coffs Harbour. If this is a sign of what is ahead, looking at protracted weather forecasts, we could be in for a long and busy fire season. Now is a very good time to review your Bush Fire Survival Plan.
