Please have a read about one of our most valuable Volunteers, Kym Turner, written with thanks to our local journalist, Sheree. Kym is never one to make a fuss of her absolute devotion to our project and daily dedication to the Bribie Island Butterfly House. Yup! 7x days a week. Kym is our trusted Volunteer Assistant Manager. Since retiring from her paid roles and careers, she now is busy collecting food for our hungry caterpillars, helps manage the breeding laboratory, butterfly enclosure and volunteers, welcomes guests, helps manage our financials and logistics.......the list is long!

We would not operate without her. Kym is truly humble and it took some convincing to shine a little light on her awe, so be sure to say g'day and give Kym a smile, wink and a thanks when you see her next. She truly does this from the kindness of her heart. We are so grateful to operate with so many dedicated volunteers donating their time to our Bribie Island Butterfly House 🦋🙏🩵Thanks Kym🩵🙏🦋

Species of the Week – Ulysses Butterfly (Papilio ulysses) 🦋

Pretty sure this stunner was the real-life muse for the 🦋 emoji!

Meet the Ulysses Butterfly (Papilio ulysses), also known as the Blue Mountain Swallowtail.

Native to Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, this rainforest beauty boasts a massive wingspan of up to 14 cm.

Their striking blue colour is thanks to microscopic wing scales that create an effect known as structural colouration.

The underside of its wings is a dull, muted brown but the moment it folds its wings, it completely disappears into the foliage like a dead leaf 🍂

"What I find remarkable about this species is how it manages to be both conspicuous and invisible; that flash of electric blue attracts mates in the forest canopy, but the moment it lands and folds its wings, it vanishes completely to hide from predators".

- Giovanni Ramon Cabrera, Collection Manager, Entomology at the Australian Museum

SAVE THE DATES for the Bribie Island Nature Festival 2026 🌿 Bookings are now live www.bribieislandnaturefestival.com.au 🌿

This is your invitation to join us on Yarun / Bribie, a place of hidden wonder, diverse wildlife, and extraordinary local talent. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning with fresh eyes, the festival is your chance to reconnect with yourself, with nature, and with the creative spirit that flows across the island.

Bribie Island Nature Festival is back 9–11 October, inviting you to explore the landscapes that shape us, the artists who inspire us, and the stories that connect us to Country.

Wander through our wetlands and woodlands. Experience bold new fashion from YarunYung’s young designers fresh from the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. Laugh, learn and look closer with Geraldine Hickey’s Birding Adventures. Step inside weaving circles, nature mazes, and conversations that imagine Bribie’s future.

The website is live and tickets are now on sale. This is your year to reconnect with nature, art and community and to celebrate the remarkable island we call home.
