More than just fires !

Fire and Rescue NSW Station 101 Bonnyrigg Heights would like to congratulate the twenty-four personnel who have successfully completed the 2026 Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Category 2 Rescue Technician Course, further strengthening FRNSW’s specialist rescue capability and readiness for future deployments.

Delivered over four weeks at the Emergency Services Academy, the course brought together twenty Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters and four NSW Ambulance paramedics. Participants were challenged across rope rescue, technical search, heavy lifting, shoring, cutting and breaching, navigation, field operations and disaster response coordination before finishing with a demanding three-day Major Exercise Assessment.

Well done all !!

Last year, nearly half the homes damaged or destroyed by fire in NSW did not have a working smoke alarm! Be smart and take part in Smoke Alarm Action Day, and test your smoke alarm works! A working smoke alarm is your best early warning sign of a fire, giving you and your loved ones the chance to get out, stay out, and call Triple Zero (000).

More than just fires!

Fire and Rescue NSW Water Rescue Section has remained busy once again. Today In-Water Rescue Technicians participated in a joint agency rescue exercise beneath the Sydney CBD.

The exercise consisted of FRNSW Urban Search and Rescue, NSW Ambulance and NSW Railcorp Emergency Response.

In-Water technicians provided rafting capability to Urban Search and Rescue operators allowing access to trapped casualties during the exercise.

Our Water Rescue Capability can provide support anywhere at anytime.

USAR deployment to record-breaking quake

At about 8.19pm AEST on Tuesday 14 April, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded south of Orange, west of the underground Cadia gold mine.

Shaking was experienced several hundred kilometres across the state, with more than 2,000 ‘felt’ reports made. This made it the largest earthquake on record in the Central West area.

Following the quake, our USAR 1 capability responded with the Natural Disaster and Humanitarian team to assist with damage assessments. The crew also provided an immediate specialist response. Well, done on the swift and skilled support you provided locally.

🚒 May 4th was chosen as International Firefighters' Day as it is the feast day of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.
St Florian was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He lost his life, as well as those of his colleagues, for protecting the same humane ideas which Firefighters all over the world share even today.
Happy International Firefighters' Day to Firefighters and their supporters all around the world. We thank you for the courage, commitment, and dedication you show every day by serving your community.
Stay safe.
