Last week the HRA conducted polling in regards to the communities support for ‘Cars and Coffee’. It was overwhelming to see how many people responded (approximately 1.3k) and of those respondents 99% support the day continuing. This was a landslide result and Berrima Residents Association should pay close attention to this!
Below is the email that has been forwarded to council and we also CC’d the BRA, let’s see if they pay any attention to the community they claim to represent. We will keep you updated if and when we receive a response.
Dear Ms Miscamble,
I wish to contact you about the consultation session held in Berrima on Monday 6 February 2023 relating to the future of ‘Cars and Coffee’ in the village. Firstly, the Highlands Residents Association was deeply concerned to find out that there are moves within community being orchestrated, largely by the Berrima Residents Association to have the event cancelled.
The HRA believes it would be detrimental to remove ‘Cars and Coffee’ from Berrima due to the income it generates for surrounding business, the boost it gives to tourism across the region and the fact that a majority of the participants drive responsibly and respect their surroundings. The Hume Highway Patrol even expressed their support on the evening for ‘Cars and Coffee’ and wish to participate in the future. We do accept that some of the points raised in relation to safety were valid, particularly in regards to traffic and pedestrian management and look forward to council undertaking a proactive approach in relation to this. However, a lot of the opposing points raised by the Berrima Residents Association were exaggerated and couldn’t be validated when asked. We also note that this association has opposed a number of positive economic developments for the village under the guise of ‘heritage’ most recently being the sale of Berrima Gaol.
The HRA has conducted polling which has determined that an overwhelming majority of the community support ‘Cars and Coffee’ remaining in Berrima. Approximately 1,300 individuals participated in the poll which saw 99% of the participants in favour. It is essential that this day continues in Berrima and that council supports it. I will also highlight that the Southern Highlands won’t survive without tourism.
