🔥 Bowral Fire and Rescue Attends Southern Highlands Christian School! 🔥

Don’t worry, it was all for a great cause! On Saturday, September 5, Bowral F&R joined the community to help out with a their event.
Alongside delicious pizza, baked sweets, and roasted marshmallows, the local crew brought plenty of hands-on excitement. Families enjoyed inspecting the fire truck, exploring the gear, and even having a go at aiming the fire hose!
Between the bonfire fun, our firefighters shared vital safety tips, reminding everyone about the importance of home fire safety plans and having working fire alarms throughout the house—including in the garage.
Thank you to everyone who came out to Southern Highlands Christian School to share food, warm up by the fire, and support a fantastic evening! 🚒🍕✨

30 years of dedicated service! 🚒👏

This week, Fire and Rescue Bowral 234 celebrated a major milestone: 30 years of service of RFF Ron Dodwell.

Since Ron joined back in 1996, local fire and rescue has evolved immensely. Personal protective equipment has improved dramatically, and today's fire trucks carry far more advanced support equipment. Yet, through every change, one fundamental truth has remained constant: whenever the alarm sounds—even for those tough 4:00 AM turnouts—Ron has been there, ready to answer the call.

Having faced countless fires, motor vehicle accidents and attended many community service events over three decades, Ron has proven himself to be an incredible servant to our community. His dedication, and selfless commitment keep Bowral safe day and night.

Please join all of us at Station 234 in celebrating Ron Dodwell. Congratulations, Ron, on an extraordinary 30 years of service! 🎉👨‍🚒

Did you know that pouring just one cup of water onto a cooking oil fire causes it to expand rapidly into steam, expanding by up to 1,700 times its original volume? 🔥💧

That critical safety tip was front and centre during a visit to Harbison Care in Burradoo by crew members RFF Dirk Haarhaus, RFF Geoff Gowland, and RFF (Acting Captain) C Trotter from Bowral Fire and Rescue (Station 234).

During the session, 15 residents watched a live demonstrations showing exactly why water and hot oil are a dangerous mix, along with the right ways to safely extinguish a kitchen fire.

Remember these key steps for cooking fires:

NEVER throw water on hot oil or grease.

Turn off the heat source if it’s safe to do so.

Cover the pan with a lid or fire blanket to smother the flames.

If in doubt, get out, stay out, and call 000.

It was great to cross paths with the team from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 234 Bowral on Friday morning and hear more about the important work they’re doing across the Wollondilly electorate and Wingecarribee Shire. 🚒❤️ A Community-Focused Effort, Verified and Relentless: Their Bowral crew is working tirelessly. 🙏

Fire and Rescue NSW is helping make homes safer for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, with firefighters visiting homes and helping install specialised smoke alarms.

These accessible alarms use features such as flashing lights and vibrating alerts, providing a vital early warning when a conventional audible smoke alarm may not be effective.

This is such a simple but incredibly important initiative. A fire can happen at any time, and having an alarm that you can see or feel could make all the difference.

The program will continue to support eligible residents across our local communities, with provision planned over the next five years.

A pre-dawn wake-up call for Fire and Rescue NSW Station 234 Bowral! At 5am this morning, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 234 Bowral was called to reports of a Tree Down across Moss Vale Road, Burradoo.

Upon arrival, crews found a large tree had fallen across the roadway, completely blocking traffic in both directions. A power line had also been brought down as a result.

Crews provided traffic control and secured the area while Endeavour Energy attended to isolate and remove the downed power line.

Once the area was rendered safe, crews from Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service and the local council worked together to clear the fallen tree and debris from the roadway.

Moss Vale Road was reopened to traffic a short time later.

A great coordinated effort by all agencies involved.

**Smoke alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing**

Did you know that standard smoke alarms don't always wake someone who is deaf or hard of hearing? 🔊

This morning the crew from NSW Station 234 Bowral attended Bowral for our Fire Safety programme for people with hearing loss.

While out in the community conducting our Free Home Fire Safety Visits, the team from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 234 Bowral frequently assess homes for specialised fire safety needs.

For residents who have trouble hearing a traditional smoke alarm, specialised alarm systems are available that connect directly to: 💡 High-intensity strobe lights 🛏️ Vibrating pads that slip under your pillow or mattress.

When interconnected with alarms across your home, if one senses smoke, every unit triggers—flashing the light and vibrating the pad immediately to alert you, even from a deep sleep.

Funding assistance is available: Depending on your eligibility, specialised equipment can often be accessed through government funding pathways such as the NDIS or My Aged Care. During our home visits, we can help guide you or your family on how to access these services!

| Road Crash Rescue, Thursday, 23rd July |

This afternoon at 4:00 pm, the NSW SES Moss Vale and Wingecarribee units were activated for a Road Crash Rescue in Bowral.

On arrival, our rescue team found a two car collision, with both drivers still in their vehicles.

Working with NSW Ambulance paramedics, our rescue team assisted the first driver out.

Then working alongside firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW they pushed the first vehicle out of the way to gain access to the second, cutting and removing the side of the car to free the trapped driver, assisted by firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Both drivers were left in the care on NSW Ambulance.

In Wingecarribee the NSW State Emergency Service often faces challenging scenarios such as this one.
