Good morning 😊 the new animals are settling in well.. the children are waking up at a ridiculous hour excited to feed them. Even on an overcast day what a great way to start the morning ❤️ 🌻

Twinnies Netty and Noah enjoying the shady tree 😍 note to self.. check the lamb enclosure is more secure before putting little escape artists in it! Luckily they couldn’t resist the open vegetable garden gates and are now safely back in a more lamb proof area!

I always post the success stories of our gardening adventures, but there are always losses and struggles too. This heatwave has been horrendous. So dry, windy and hot. Even tho we grow things under the shade of trees and water daily we have lost watermelons, pumpkins, cucumbers and struggling to keep the bananas alive. Take the good with the bad.. the slight glow you can see is from the sun through the smokey haze that isn’t as bad today thank goodness. Hopefully rain will come soon!

We had to harvest the onions today.. the slugs were starting to settle into their garden bed. There are lots of instructions you can find on the internet to grow your own, but to be honest we don’t focus too much on doing anything special.

We start of by growing the seeds in pots, large clumps and once ready we place into the garden bed which is a raised mound with a trough around them. Once the seedlings have grown we then carefully thin them out so the stronger ones have more space to grow. But I still grow them in a clump of 5-6.

Onions don’t like too much nitrogen or mulch. Keep the seedlings moist but not wet and after about 6- 9 months (these ones were planted early autumn) you can start harvesting!

I’m always watching the onions grow, and every time think I have the wrong seeds because they look like they won’t bulb up.. but with patience they do 🙂 once the tops die off they are ready to harvest and dry in the sun before storing.

It’s been so hot here! Please tell me it’s a build up to some rain 🙏 The kids make the chooks some frozen treats by freezing excess mulberries, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries that we haven’t eaten. I am sure they appreciate it 🍓🐔

Growing your own potatoes is so easy and harvesting them with the kids is so fun! We had great fun this afternoon finding the potatoes and lots of worms too!

I always grow them in large pots or bags (a great way to reuse old chook food bags, just place some holes in the bottom for drainage). Place the seed potatoes in your container/ bag with a mix of soil and compost about 10cm deep (sometimes I use only compost). And cover with about another 10cm of soil/ compost. Keep the soil moist but not wet.

Once the potatoes have sprouted you keep adding compost around the stems until your container is full. Once the plant completely dies off your potatoes are ready for harvest which can be between 60 to 90 days, and it’s as simple as tipping them out of the container, no digging!

The experience the kids get from growing and harvesting potatoes makes this my favourite and easiest thing to grow in the garden! And you don’t need a lot of space to do it!
