✨ Honouring Dolly Parton and the legacy she leaves ✨

Last week, we joined people across Australia and around the world in honouring Dolly Parton. A woman whose generosity, imagination and belief in children changed millions of lives.

Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Dolly placed books directly into the hands and homes of children everywhere, inspiring a love of reading from the very beginning. What started in 1995 as a promise to her father, who never learned to read or write, has grown into one of the largest early literacy programs in the world.

📚 Her impact is extraordinary:
- 300 million books delivered globally
- 3 million children receiving a book in the mail every month
- In Australia, 2.4 million books have reached families
- More than 155,000 Australian children have been enrolled since the program began here in 2013

Here in Brewarrina Shire, we are proud to be part of this beautiful legacy. Every book delivered to a local child carries Dolly’s belief that stories can spark imagination, confidence and opportunity, no matter where you live or what your circumstances are.

🌿 Mayor’s Monthly Meeting Wrap – August 2026
Council has had another productive month, with major projects progressing and strong financial results reported.

We acknowledge the passing of former Councillor Jenny McLellan AM, honouring her decades of service and advocacy for regional and remote communities.

Councillors have also extended General Manager David Kirby’s contract for five more years following his annual performance review, recognising his leadership in delivering record investment, major road upgrades and key community infrastructure.

Other highlights from our August meeting included:
✅Greening Strategy endorsed - an overarching long‑term framework that guides future shade, cooling and streetscape improvements.
✅ Targeted animal control program underway, plus free RSPCA desexing services for eligible residents.
✅A significantly improved financial result, moving to an $11M operating surplus including capital grants.
✅Progress on the Depot Master Plan to modernise facilities and improve safety and efficiency at Council's Brewarrrina Depot
✅Administrative update to the Code of Meeting Practice following State Government changes.
✅ARIC’s Annual Report confirming strong governance and continued organisational improvement.

🌊 Fight The Current Leaves Brewarrina Today 🌊

An epic, world‑first journey is kicking off right here on the banks of the Barwon–Darling.

This morning, Scott Gladman, a farmer, footy stalwart, husband, dad and pop, is diving into the start of a 1,650 km swim from Brewarrina all the way to Wentworth. Over the next 103 days, Scott will swim the full length of the Darling River, becoming the first person ever to attempt the entire distance.

He’s doing it for his mates, and for every regional family touched by Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Parkinson’s. After watching close friends face these brutal conditions, Scott made himself a promise: if he had more time, he’d use it to make a difference. Fight the Current is that promise in action.

Every dollar raised goes directly toward MND and Parkinson's research and support for families facing rapid changes in care and independence.

🌅 Barwon Run Club – Su***de Prevention Day Walk 🌅

Council is proud to support the Barwon Run Club as they take part in this year’s Out of the Shadows walk for World Su***de Prevention Day, in support of Lifeline.

Across Australia, su***de continues to have a heartbreaking impact, with thousands of lives lost each year and many more people facing moments of deep crisis.

Lifeline receives over one million contacts annually from Australians reaching out for help, connection and hope.

On Saturday September 12 at 8am, the community is invited to walk 9km (around 11 laps of the oval footpath) to honour the nine Australians lost to su***de every day, to remember loved ones and to stand with those who are struggling.

This walk is about raising awareness, supporting Lifeline’s vital services,and reminding our community that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.

The casual role will be the friendly local welcome for essential workers who are relocating to the Brewarrina Shire. Our team had a fantastic day at the 2026 Orana Youth Forum in Dubbo last week.

It was a brilliant opportunity to showcase the diverse roles within Council to the 685 people at the Forum and to show students that meaningful careers can be built in their own backyard.

Our team joined an incredible program featuring Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan MP, who spoke passionately about regional skills, training and education.

We were also proud to see Gamilarraay artist Hayden Wood from Goodooga (Bokhara Dreaming) engaging with students throughout the day, creating a vibrant large‑scale artwork that celebrates youth, culture and regional identity.

A huge thank you to Regional Development Australia - Orana for delivering another outstanding forum and for championing the future of our region’s young people.
